Stephen Fulton Confident On Figueroa Rematch Happening

Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton (20-0, 8 KO’s) is still basking in the glow over his win against Brandon Figueroa (22-1-1, 17 KO’s) in November of 2021. It was one of the best fights of 2021, as he became the unified WBC/WBO junior featherweight champion.

Immediately after the fight, “Cool Boy Steph” said he was down for a rematch. Figueroa said he’d be willing to go again, but only at 126 pounds, declaring the fight was his last at 122 pounds.

LOVE TO RUN IT BACK

In attendance for Mark Magsayo’s upset win over Gary Russell Jr at the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Fulton was interviewed ringside by Showtime’s Jim Gray. Asked about the possibility of a rematch with Figueroa, the fighting pride of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania said he would love to do it again. When questioned whether Figueroa would fight him again at 122, this was Fulton’s response:

“I think he’ll do it. For the fight like that and the opportunity, no one will turn that down.”

As far as what is on the immediate horizon, Fulton told Gray he’s looking to get back in the ring in March or April, followed by a fight with Figueroa if it presents itself.

While the rematch is on his mind, his initial preference is a unification showdown against current IBF/WBA Super champ Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadaliev. If that fight were to happen, it would be later this year as the IBF has ordered “MJ” to face their mandatory junior featherweight contender, Marlon Tapales.

THE UNMITIGATED GALL

In truth, Figueroa is in no position to dictate any terms on a potential second matchup. Some fans and pundits believe he deserved the win, but the judges felt otherwise. If Figueroa wants the fight, it must be on Fulton’s terms. Aside from that, one thing is pretty evident. Whether he faces Figueroa again or lands a fight with Akhmadaliev, Stephen Fulton seems hungry, and on a mission, to prove he’s the best in the division.
