Martin Kelner has just broken a "media exclusive" at 4am on Talksport - he said that he has recently had lunch with Chris Choi of ITV News and the ITV weekday news at 6.30pm will be extended to one hour to become a "news and magazine show" with a view to taking some of The One Show audience in the 7pm half-hour.

He didn't give any more details. He referred to the Local News at 6pm but didn't say whether it would be moved into this hour - ie whether the whole thing just amounts to moving the 60 minutes of news back 30 minutes or whether there would now be a total of 90 minutes of Local news, National news and "magazine".

I must say the whole thing seems unlikely as it would be a very big change indeed but who knows - he certainly sounded as if he knew and he wasn't joking.

If this is true then Emmerdale will be permanently moving to 7:30pm, which would mean Corrie at 8:00pm? And then what do the BBC do with EastEnders? Very interesting times ahead.

I would be really surprised if they moved Emmerdale out of slot for something that would rate significantly lower.

Unfortunately not. I’m fairly certain this is accurate.

The new schedules could look like this:

    Monday
    Emmerdale - 7.30 pm - 8 pm
    Coronation Street - 8 pm - 9 pm

    Tuesday
    Emmerdale - 7.30 pm - 8 pm

    Wednesday
    Emmerdale - 7.30 pm - 8 pm
    Coronation Street - 8 pm - 9 pm

    Thursday
    Emmerdale - 7.30 pm - 8.30 pm

    Friday
    Emmerdale - 7.30 pm - 8 pm
    Coronation Street - 8 pm - 9 pm

This could mean EE would go up against Emmerdale and Coronation Street unless BBC decides to change EE time slots as well.

It shouldn't really be an issue these days anyway. Plus this might make ITV to decide to premiere Emmerdale and Coronation Street on ITV Hub at the start of each week or each weekday morning ahead of that day's broadcast.

The times Corrie and Emmerdale are broadcast should be left as they are.

Wow. ITV going for the final knockout blow to EE but this could come at a cost in particular for cs

True but at same time, it might work well for Corrie if went for 3 x 60 as I find that the Friday episodes are enjoyable as a hour long than split, so if writers can begin writing proper hour long editions then it might be to its benefit with no silly cliffhangers at end of 7:30pm episodes but writing needs to be improved first.

with a view to taking some of The One Show audience in the 7pm half-hour.

It's not like TOS is a massive rater. It does alright for what it is but it is hardly a threat to them or something to be envious of.

Wouldn't they need to ask ofcom for permission first?

Channel 5 got permission earlier this year to have an hour long news program (this moving neighbours out of its slot)

Both Itv news and channel 5 news are produced by ITN

EastEnders did air at 7pm for its first six months in 1985 and with the new set onscreen in March, it could be coming full circle. A consistent 7pm slot with little competition could be a blessing in disguise for the show.

ITV news already tried out 06:30 -07:15pm earlier this year. ITV news should have a platform as they are the only major competitor who’s not go a 24 hour news channel, as they scrapped that years ago.

    MORE:

News and confirmation coming in the next few days. Expected to be implemented by April.

Emmerdale on from 7:30pm and Corrie will air 3xOne hour slots. Possibly an hour slot for emmerdale on Thursday.

It would be a risk but could work.

The move is designed to capitalise on the strong ratings of the ITV Evening News whilst strengthening the ITV evening schedule at relatively low cost.

I’ll believe it when I see it but If this is true then it goes up against eastenders which usually soaps don’t like to do so does that mean eastenders are moving?

WOW. RIP EE. This is the fatal blow.

I don't know why ITV wants to extend their news channel by a further 30 minutes; aren't there enough news channels already available?? As for extending the time slots for the weekly soaps it won't matter much to me since I always record them anyway.

It's possible (if this is true) Corrie won't change and Emmerdale will just move to 8pm.

Either way, EastEnders will suffer in the overnights unless it moves. It could swap with The One show and take a permanent 7pm slot, but it depends if the BBC want to move The One Show to 7:30pm.

Let's see how this pans out.

This is actually happening. If EE isn't on at 7pm. I'll be watching first look Hollyoaks at 7pm instead of the news. Interesting times indeed.
