All monkeys accounted for after tractor-trailer crash: Police

State Police said on Saturday evening that all the monkeys on the loose after a tractor-trailer crash on Friday afternoon were account for.

Pennsylvania State Troopers Andrea Pelachick & Lauren Lesher tweeted the new Saturday evening.

“Crash Update: All monkeys have been accounted for,” the tweet said.

Earlier in the day state police said they were still searching for one of four monkeys and warned people to not look for or approach the monkey. But, Saturday evening in a news release they said that only three monkeys were on the loose and they were all accounted for.

A tractor-trailer hauling 100 lab monkeys crashed with a dump truck Friday afternoon on Route 54 near the Danville exit of Interstate 80 in Montour County, State police said. The location of the lab and the type of research for which the monkeys were destined weren’t clear, but cynomolgus monkeys are often used in medical studies, the Associated Press reported.

Crates littered the road Friday as troopers searched for monkeys, rifles in hand, and Valley Township firefighters used thermal imaging to try to locate the animals, and a helicopter also assisted, the Press Enterprise reported.

A passenger in the tractor-trailer was transported to Geisinger Medical Center with suspected minor injuries.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission , Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Liberty Valley Fire Department, Liberty Valley EMS, Bressler’s Garage and PSP Aviation were all involved at the scene.
