The Ford F-150 nameplate has a larger fanbase than the Chevy Silverado nameplate

It’s no accident that Ford is using one of its existing nameplates to step into the electric future. Electrifying a nameplate brings consumers familiarity and comfort, knowing that the EV won’t deviate too far from its origins in terms of quality. Both electric pickup trucks are paying homage to the full-size pickup trucks that inspired their creation, but one is much more popular than the other.

The Ford F-150 has enjoyed little competition other than its sworn rival, the Ram 1500, over the years. The F-150 and Ram 1500 frequently top full-size truck rankings will other models duke it out for third place. The Silverado has been unable to even stand against other models for third place in recent years. It’s not certain, but the popularity of the F-150 could influence fans and drivers of the truck to gain an interest in the F-150 Lightning.

Since the F-150 is more popular in America than the Silverado, Chevy is playing catch up in the coming electric pickup truck race. GM will retain some of its consumers that enjoy the Silverado and possibly convert them into Silverado EV owners. One of the advantages of announcing a vehicle first is having more informed consumers. Though Ford is still keeping plenty of details under wraps, we already know a lot about its new EV. Many consumers won’t be able to afford its higher trim levels, even with electric vehicle tax credits.

Consumers know that the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will have a standard 230 miles of range. Consumers also know that all F-150 Lightning models feature the useful Mega Power Funk and multiple power outlets for tools and appliances. Only certain trim levels come with Ford Pro Power Onboard, but not every F-150 Lightning owner will need this feature.

The more popular truck could come down to each truck’s capability as a work truck. Ford has explained the F-150 Lightning’s utility. Thus far, consumers know much more about the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV’s RST trim than any other trim. The Silverado EV’s final trim is capable, but at over $100,000, it’s hardly affordable.
