Outlander fans are currently rejoicing, as season 6 finally got a trailer ahead of its return in March, while season 7 is set to follow with the longest run of episodes since season 1. Droughtlander is truly over.

But what about beyond that? The seventh season will adapt the seventh novel in Diana Gabaldon's series, which means that there are currently two novels left untouched. Does that mean that we are getting nine seasons?

Well, it's not a dead cert, according to leading actress Caitríona Balfe.

When asked about the show's post-season 7 future by Radio Times, the star said: "I don't know. I mean, we've only been picked up for one more season. So those decisions are sort of out of our hands.

"But you know, I always have said, if we have good scripts, and if the story is interesting, then, you know, why wouldn't you want to continue on?"

"That's above my pay grade, those decisions," she reiterated.

Balfe isn't just returning to the small screen in Outlander season 6, as she's appearing on the big screen in Kenneth Branagh's new movie Belfast, centred on a young boy's coming of age in the titular city. Jamie Dornan, Judi Dench, Ciarán Hinds and Colin Morgan also star in this one.

Recently, Balfe spoke about the conspiracy theories that she is dating her co-star Sam Heughan and that her actual marriage to Anthony McGill wasn't real.

"It's sad," she said, "because you meet the loveliest people who are fans of the show and they're super supportive and they do the nicest things – and then you have that little thing, which just taints it."

Outlander is due to return for season 6 on March 6. It airs on Starz in the US and streams on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
