Ralf Rangnick admits he's still 'not quite happy' with Man United's work in possession after watching them scrape all three points against West Ham thanks to Marcus Rashford's injury-time winner

• But he says his side could do better both in possession and in the final third 
• The win against the Hammers sees United go fourth for first time since October

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick was complimentary of his defence in the win over West Ham but admitted there is still room for improvement. 

United made it two wins in three days as Marcus Rashford's injury time winner ensured Rangnick's men overtook their opponents into fourth spot. 

The 63-year-old was happy with the win but felt his team could have done better to gain control of the game despite their strong defensive performance. 

When asked if it was the most controlled performance of his reign, he told MUTV: ‘Well defensively I would say yes, because from normal play we didn’t allow them too many chances.

‘And as I said, it was not easy against them, they are a very physical team.

‘But I am still not quite happy with the way that we play in possession of the ball, so this will have to be the next steps in the next couple of weeks that we also find better solutions in possession of the ball.’

Rangnick felt his team need to be patient in the final third. He told BBC Match of The Day: ‘We didn’t always find the best solutions in the final third.

‘In the last 20 minutes we had too many shots on goal when there was no realistic chance to score. We needed to be a bit more patient, but in the end it was about taking all three points.'

Speaking about his defence again, Rangnick added: ‘As I said, we didn’t allow them [many chances], I can only remember one good chance they had after the corner kick five minutes from time.

‘But from normal play, from normal build-up, I don’t remember any situations. We had I think two or three good ones, especially with Fred, the header from Cristiano in the first half. But it was a very competitive and very disciplined game.’

The win against the Hammers sees United enter the Champions League spots for the first time in three months and they'll take-on Middlesborough in the fourth Round of the FA Cup on Friday.
