GULSTAN: HAPPENING RIGHT NOW -- AN EXPERIMENTAL EFFORT TO REDUCE TRAFFIC TROUBLES IN A PART OF TRACY THAT’S GROWING. SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS IS CONVERTING HANSEN RD,OA BETWEEN I-205 AND VON SOEN ROAD -- THEY ARE MAKGIN IT INTO A ONE-WAY STREET. THAT HAS CREATED SOME ISSUES. Some Tracy residents raise safety concerns over experimental road closure
A portion of Hansen Road between Von Sosten and Interstate 205 in southwest Tracy is now closed off to southbound traffic.Residents have been asking San Joaquin County officials for safer roadways and help to reduce truck and commuter traffic in the industrial area."There have been some reports of truck traffic from the development south of Interstate 205, and so this project is going to be looking to try to reduce some of that traffic," said Najee Zarif, the deputy director of engineering at San Joaquín County's department of public works.The closure is part of a 90-day pilot program that San Joaquin County Public Works is experimenting with to determine future road improvements. Najee said during this three-month period, they'll determine if other measures will be needed or if the partial road closure will stay permanently.But the change has some residents in the area unhappy. They don't believe this is a good idea for a problem they say has increasingly gotten worse.KCRA 3 was in the area for a few hours and witnessed drivers turning around mid-intersection and even ignoring the partial road closure.Tammy Merrill, who lives on Hansen Road, said she's been part of several meetings. "We would never have suggested a partial one-way solution. We think it's actually going to traverse into and throughout the communities more," Merrill said.Residents are also concerned about what this temporary one-way street means for neighborhood traffic, which is already seeing more cars rerouting and driving their community.The county hasn't established alternate routes for area traffic.San Joaquin County officials said they're working with the California Highway Patrol and the City of Tracy to increase patrols.
