Mario Cristobal is settling into his new role as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes.

The former Oregon Ducks front man joined Paul Finebaum earlier this week to talk about his new role. Finebaum asked Cristobal what exactly is in store for the Miami program in the offseason and the Miami head coach provided a detailed response.

“Everything is still about making the right hires, we like to make sure that they are right instead of trying to get it done in a hurry,” Cristobal said. “We are evaluating and talking to multiple candidates at multiple positions.”

Mario Cristobal went on to detail a wide array of focal points for the Hurricanes’ coaching staff between now and the start of spring practice.

“And then we finish off the recruiting class while starting off 2023, making sure that we are spending an extraordinary amount of time with our players as we begin the winter conditioning program, making sure we are doing a tremendous job academically as we begin the mental toughness and accountability program.,” Cristobal added.

“Making sure are systems are in place. Whether that’s offense, defense, special teams or culturally. Making sure our alumni outreach, whether it’s our camps or clinics, our little league outreach. You name it, there isn’t much sleep. I’m sure my wife will enjoy the beaches and what not, but there will be a lot of time before I enjoy any free time.”

Mario Cristobal explains rationale behind leaving Oregon for Miami

Cristobal shocked many in the college football world when he opted to leave the Oregon Ducks to accept the head coaching job for the Miami Hurricanes.

Earlier this week, Cristobal joined Paul Finebaum to explain the rationale behind the decision.

“Honestly, Paul, it was the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make,” Cristobal said. “It was grueling, it was very suddenly put on our family. It was difficult, but at the same time, a tremendous blessing. The x-factor being, more than it just being home, this is actually where I played. I wore this helmet, I wore this uniform. I have blood in this one, you know.

Mario Cristobal pointed out how he and his staff quickly turned the Oregon program around. They plan to do the same in Coral Gables.

“On top of that, we’ve got to feel good about the fact that when we arrived at Oregon, Oregon was 4-8,” the new Hurricanes’ coach added.

“And upon leaving, you’re looking at a team that has gone to 3-straight conference titles, won two of them. Won a Rose Bowl, 3-straight top ten picks. They are sitting on the most talent they have ever had there, so, it’s been left in a great place. They treated us great there. We are super grateful and thankful, but all focus is on Miami. We know what Miami is and why Miami does it right, so we are excited.”
