Dale Earnhardt Jr. is officially a Hall of Fame driver.

The son of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt officially joined his dad in the NASCAR Hall of Fame last night with an emotional speech reflecting on his time in the sport and what being honored in the Hall of Fame means to him.

“The people enshrined in this building, they are my role models, and they are my heroes, and one of them happens to be my dad so to join Dad in the Hall of Fame is probably as good as it’s going to get…”

The younger Earnhardt obviously never had the success on the track that his dad had, but the impact he had on the sport’s meteoric rise in popularity during the early 2000s, as well as his popularity with fans (he won the Most Popular Driver award 15 years in a row), made him an obvious choice to take a spot in the Hall of Fame next to Earnhardt Sr.

And he still remains one of the most well-liked and respected members of the NASCAR garage area, something that was obvious from all the messages of congratulations he received from both current and former drivers after his induction.

Big congrats to Dale Jr. on the well-deserved honor.
