As one of the most popular new electric crossover models on the market, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E has a lot to like. There are plenty of reasons to buy one, but what are some reasons not to buy the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E? The American automaker used its popular sports car model’s name to sell this electric beast. It’s affordable and tech-filled but isn’t a perfect electric crossover.

The first reasons not to buy the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E: the GT trim isn’t worth the price

According to Car and Driver, the Mustang Mach-E GT and GT Performance Edition models cost $63,095 and $66,095, respectively. These prices are after shipping, handling, and destination fees are applied by the automaker. Unfortunately, with the base price being roughly $20,000 cheaper, the GT trim isn’t worth it. GT and GT Performance Edition Mustang Mach-Es have a black-painted roof, an extended range battery, and all-wheel drive.

The standard GT model comes with 270 miles of range and 480 horsepower. However, the GT Performance Edition battery can drive 260 miles per charge and make 480 horsepower. Although the Performance Edition does boost torque from 600 to 634 lb-ft. While these upgrades are nice, is it worth the extra $20,000? A 305-mile extended range battery is available on the cheaper California Route 1 model, as is a 300-mile range, 346 horsepower setup. That’s why the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT isn’t worth the premium price.

Do not buy the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E because it drives like a sports car, even off-road

Both MotorTrend and Car and Driver note how the Mustang Mach-E drives. Specifically, Car and Driver dislikes that the electric crossover isn’t as fun to drive like a real Mustang. Real Mustangs are sporty and fast, making them desirable for anyone searching for that type of car. The same name used for an EV makes drivers want the same kind of performance, which the Mach-E fails to provide. Although it is fast and drives well, it just isn’t up-to-snuff.

MotorTrend points out that off-road driving is a significant weak point. Other crossovers, like the Subaru Forester, are gaining off-road trim levels. Off-road driving ability is vital to many people, even if it’s to go to a campsite or hike. MT says the Mustang Mach-E still drives like a sports car when it’s off-road, which is very bad. Going with a Ford Mustang Mach-E means you’ll have to stay on the road with your new crossover.

A reason not to buy the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is the regenerative braking

Regenerative braking is meant to take some of the friction off of the brake pads and rotors. This saves owners from having to replace these parts as often, therefore saving money in the long run. However, multiple reviewers note that the Mach-E’s regenerative braking takes some getting used to.

Auto Guide described regenerative braking in electric vehicles using this analogy, “It’s almost as if, instead of dissipating your car’s kinetic energy as waste heat each time you brake, your brake pads could instead convert that energy into gasoline that gets poured right back into your tank. Preposterous? Maybe. But it’s an apt analogy for how regenerative braking works on a hybrid or electric vehicle.”

Edmunds specifically noted that the regenerative braking system and One-Pedal driving are challenging to get used to. However, we think spending time driving the electric crossover will eliminate that discombobulation. After all, you’d need to adjust to any new vehicle when you first begin to drive it.

You should avoid the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E if you’re interested in the GT trims, driving off-road, or don’t want to adjust to regenerative braking. Each of these items is a weak point in an otherwise excellent model. If none of these issues are your significant concerns, the Mustang Mach-E is an incredible electric crossover choice. After all, it’s already won awards after its first year of sales.
