The Montreal Canadiens were left without a captain following the news that
Shea Weber would miss the entire 2021-22 season, and possibly even being forced to retire early due to a few injuries he is dealing with.
Now it appears that the captaincy role won't be left vacant for a second straight year. While on TSN 690 radio, Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes said that there will be a captain named and on the ice for the 2022-23 season.
"Yes, I don't think we would be looking to go through next season without a captain of this team. How we go about determining that and it's hard to do right now, you know, we have a trade deadline approaching and we don't know what the team is going to look like, who's going to be a part or not a part of it at that point in time. But without question, there needs to be a leader," Hughes said.
The most likely option to wear the 'C' next season is
Brendan Gallagher. The 29-year-old is the second-longest tenured Canadiens player only behind
Carey Price. Gallagher has shown leadership on and off the ice and in 2015 was named an alternate captain.
