Potential pet owners can take advantage of waived adoption fees at Pasadena Humane between now and Jan. 31 when they adopt dogs 40 pounds and over, as part of a “Live Large-Adopt a Big Dog” campaign spearheaded by Pasadena Humane and Best Friends Animal Society.
Dogs up for adoption under the program will be spayed or neutered, vaccines updated and microchipped. Adopters will receive a free health exam at a participating veterinarian and a discount at the Pasadena Humane Shelter Shop. Adopters living in the Pasadena Humane licensing service area can get a dog license at the time of adoption.
“We have more than 30 big dogs in our care right now,” Dia DuVernet, President and CEO of Pasadena Humane, said in a statement. “We would love for each of them to find the new home they deserve. Big dogs bring a lot of love and can make great family pets.”
Interested adopters can preview available dogs and make an adoption appointment at www.pasadenahumane.org/adopt.
“The goal of this campaign is to get 500 or more big dogs into homes in two weeks,” Kaylee Hawkins, Pacific Region Director at Best Friends Animal Society, said. “Since it’s been hard to live large in the usual ways during this pandemic, our message is that a big dog can bring lots of love and fun into your life. Even if you live in a small space, there’s a big dog waiting in a shelter that can be perfect for you.”
Californians who are not able to commit to adoption can still make a huge lifesaving impact by temporarily opening their home to a foster dog through their local shelter, while the rescue or shelter helps to find a permanent adopter. Pasadena Humane will provide free pet food, supplies and medical treatment to foster homes.
“Foster parents provide much-needed kennel breaks for dogs, helping them get ready for adoption in a loving home environment,” added DuVernet. “Fostering a dog is wonderful way to help a shelter pet in need while enjoying all the love a dog has to give.”
