Jimmy Burrow: Father of Bengals QB talks on son's success, how he stays cool under pressure
With just hours until kickoff, Bengals fans are getting ready for the divisional round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans.
One of them is quarterback Joe Burrow's dad, who is down in Nashville for the game.
Jimmy Burrow actually took early retirement so he could go to every one of his son's LSU games his senior year — that's the kind of dad he is.
WLWT's Mike Dardis sat down with Jimmy Burrow to talk about the quarterback who is turning the Bengals franchise around.
Jimmy Burrow said their family wanted Joe to get drafted by Cincinnati.
"There was talk that Joe didn't wanna go there but that's where he did want to go because it was in Ohio, two and a half hours from his home and so it all added up to get drafted by the Bengals and here we are," Jimmy Burrow said.
When it comes to all the media attention on the quarterback, Jimmy Burrow said his son would be the first one to say it's not all about him.
"It's overwhelming at times and he'd be the first to tell you, it's not just him, it's a team and the coaches and his teammates. Of course, he doesn't watch any of that, I watch quite a bit of it but like you said there's so much out there right now. That's the NFL, you win a playoff game, you're in the playoffs and you're a couple games away from the Super Bowl, the whole hype of media coverage is raised and people are excited," Jimmy Burrow said.
Joe's dad is his biggest fan and knows him better than anyone, so we asked him, how is the QB stay so cool as the competition heats up.
"He likes to say he's like that because he's prepared. In his mind, everywhere he's been, high school, LSU, now the Bengals, his preparation has always been the same and he's had great coaches to prepare him and he says the calmness comes from him putting in the work and being prepared for what he's going to see," Jimmy Burrow said.
When asked what his favorite moment has been, Joe's father it was the first win over the Vikings.
"Because it was a tough road after he got injured last year. He said during camp they were going to be good and that kind of proved that all of his hard work to get back to where he could be the starting quarterback, it kind of paid off," he said.
