The UMass men’s hockey team found the back of the net a trio of times in the second period Friday night en route to a 3-2 win over Northeastern at home.
With the win, UMass improved to 11-6-2 on the season and 8-2-2 in Hockey East.
Oliver MacDonald put the Minutemen on the board after a scoreless first period when he picked up the puck from Ryan Lautenback and sliced a shot by the Huskies’ goalie. A mere 32 seconds later, Josh Lopina made it a 2-0 game when he connected on a pass from Garrett Walt and Bobby Trivigno.
While Northeastern cut into that two-goal lead a few minutes later, UMass added on a needed insurance goal 16:29 into the frame when Anthony Del Gaizo sent a shot into the top corner of the net on assists from Cal Kiefiuk and Scott Morrow.
The Huskies capitalized on a power play in the third, but it wasn’t enough after UMass’ second-period surge.
UMass outshot Northeastern 34-28 in the win, and goalie Matt Murray made 26 saves in net to improve to 11-6-2.
