Since you're just as crazy about your precious pooch as we are, we're sure you've also wondered, "Are dog subscription boxes actually worth it? Which one is the best? What all do they come with?" Well, friends, we've got answers for your most burning questions right here.

Are dog subscription boxes worth it?

Dog subscription boxes are totally worth it! Think of all the money you spend each month buying random toys and treats you spot at Target or TJ Maxx just because you want to spoil your dog. Now total those up...yeah, a subscription box is most likely much cheaper than your monthly dog goodies budget now. Not to mention, what if your dog has special dietary restrictions or needs? It's hard to treat your dog when you're worried about exactly what they can and can't have, which is why we've selected subscription boxes that do the work for you. And we haven't even mentioned the smile on your dog's face every time their new package comes in the mail. One look at that happy tail and you might as well take our wallets away.

What comes in a dog subscription box?

This depends on the exact box you get, but you can usually expect one to two treats and one to two toys in each shipment. The total product count for different boxes ranges from 4-7 items total in each shipment, and these can be compromised of toys, treats, dog accessories, chews, and even dog-related gear for you.

If your dog has specific toy preferences or any dietary restrictions, you'll want to be extra mindful of which subscription box you choose. Not all of them make switches for dogs that need specific treats, and many boxes opt for plush-style toys, which tough chewers will destroy in minutes.

Below, we've picked out the best of the best depending on your pup's needs.

Barkbox Monthly Subscription Box

$39 at Amazon

It's the dog subscription box that started it all, and if you're still wondering if it's worth it: 100% it is. A 12-month subscription comes in at under $25/month and contains 2 treat packs, 2 toys, and 1 chew for your precious pooch. And don't even get us started with those themes.

I have a tough chewer that loves to de-stuff, so I know plush-style toys won't last her too long, but Bark brand toys consistently have held up. We can usually get 1-2 months of play out of a Bark plush, as opposed to maybe 1-2 weeks for other brands.

Bark also gives pet owners the option to customize their boxes, to a certain degree. You can input your pet's allergies to update their treat selection and pick from a choice of 3-4 themes each month. You also get toys specifically chosen for your dog's play style. Of course, if you want to use one box for two or more dogs, this might present some problems.

One aspect of the BarkBox that we don't love is the timing. Customers have to choose between a recurring monthly subscription or commit to a 6- or 12-month subscription. While other companies offer quarterly boxes, that's not an option with BarkBox.

You can get a BarkBox subscription on their website and save some money by committing up-front to a 6- or 12-month plan. If you'd prefer to go month-by-month, we'd suggest going the Amazon route to save some money on shipping and for easy cancellation.

What's included:

  • 2 toys
  • 2 bags of treats
  • 1 chew

BoxDog Monthly Dog Subscription Box

If you're looking for more than just toys and treats, then look no further than BoxDog. Each subscription includes two treats, two toys, and a skincare or dog gear item. And they make sure you get your bang for your buck. The dog gear/skincare you can choose from could be a sweater, a leash, a treat mold, and so much more.

One feature we love about Box Dog is that customers get to choose from 10-20 different items with each new box based on their pup's preferences. There's a huge variety of toy types and other goodies for dog parents to choose from. We also appreciate the choice that BoxDog gives customers between a monthly subscription and a slightly beefed-up quarterly subscription.

The downside to the extras? They cost extra, of course. With a lowest price of $35 (for their 6 month prepaid plan), this comes in as one of the most expensive subscription boxes on the list. But, if you're looking for a little more variety than the typical toys and treats box, we'd say it's worth the extra cash.

What's included:

  • 2 treats
  • 2 toys
  • 1 skincare/dog gear item

It's no secret that we have a heart for rescue dogs here (there's quite a few on our CL team!), so including this box is a given. Not only will your pup love the treats, toys, and chews it contains, but you'll love that each box helps feed rescue dogs in need.

And speaking of what comes included, you can expect to get a total of five products in each box. What exactly you receive depends on your dog — RescueBox® makes selections of toys, treats, and other items based on your dog's size.

Unfortunately, though, that's about as far as you'll get with making selections. Reviewers say that the toys hold up pretty well, especially for tough chewers, but it is disappointing to not be able to customize a box based not only on your pet's play style but also any dietary restrictions they may have. This probably isn't the subscription for you if your dog has any special needs.

However, each box feeds up to 60 shelter animals, making this the most charitable subscription on the list. If you're looking for a way to do some good and spoil your pup, then look no further.

Best for Goodies You'll Both Love

Dog Mom Box

Dog moms, rejoice! This is a subscription box both you and your pup will love. Dog Mom Box includes goodies like treats and toys for your pup and clothes, bags, and cups for you. It even comes with matching gear for you and your furry family member, like scunchies and bandanas.

Customers can get a customized box sent based on their dog's size and gender. There's even an option to include your size in case any matching T-shirts are sent. In total, you can expect 5-7 items in each month's box, including a variety of toys, treats, fashion accessories, and a goodie or two for you.

Because this box does include so many goodies not just for your pup but also you, it's on the pricier side of subscription boxes. You can choose between a recurring monthly subscription at $45/box or commit to 3 months and save a little cash, with each month coming out to $40. Seeing as much as you get, though, we definitely think this box holds its value.

What's included:

  • 5-7 products of company's choice, including toys, treats, fashion accessories, and dog swag for humans

Bullymake Dog Box Subscription

Calling all pet parents who find themselves constantly throwing away chewed up toys: this one is for you. Bullymake toys are no joke, made from nylon, rubber, and ballistic material so even the toughest chewers will have a hard time wearing them down.

In addition to their incredibly well-made toys, each box also includes three packages of treats for your furry family member, which is at the top range of this list. Considering each box also includes 2-3 toys, this would be an easy one to split between 2 or more dogs in the same household.

We also love that Bullymake allows pet owners to customize their boxes based on their dog's specific needs, including size, dietary restrictions, and even toy preferences. They even give customers the opportunity to pick out what items they'll receive, or allow Bullymake to select for them. You could also select a "toys only" option if your dog would prefer that.

Per usual, each box comes with a fun theme for the month. It's important to note that since this subscription is designed specifically for tough chewers, you won't find a lot (if any) plush toys in these boxes. If you have a tough chewer that prefers plush toys over rubber or nylon, then you might want to go with the BarkBox, knowing that you'll get a new supply of toys in every month.

We love how customizable Bullymake it is. While their standard shipping is on a monthly basis, they'll work with customers to do a more personalized schedule if preferred. It's truly the best choice when it comes to dogs that are known to destroy a toy in a matter of minutes. Of course, this comes at a slight cost. The cheapest option for Bullymake is an annual subscription, which comes out to $31/box. If you choose to do monthly, though, you'll be looking at $45/box. But, for the quality and quantity of what you're getting, we'd say it's totally worth it for the tough chewers.

What's included:

  • 3 bags of treats
  • 2-3 toys

Dogs have different needs at every different age. This seems like a no-brainer, right? So why haven't many subscription boxes caught up? If you're looking for a box that'll help you train your new puppy or one that has soft chews for your senior, look no further.

While Pupbox can be used for dogs of any ages, many owners of puppies and young dogs love the subscription because of the timely toys they send. Expect teething rings, age-appropriate chews, and interactive toys to pump up Fido's brain development. Pupbox even goes the extra mile with a pamphlet of training tips and suggestions in each box based on your dog's age. In addition to the fun treats and toys for the dogs, you'll also get a few accessories paw-rents will appreciate, like dog shampoo, leashes, and more.

In addition to factoring in a dog's age and development stage, Pupbox also includes options for customization based on dietary restrictions, something we always appreciate. Pupbox is also reasonably priced in comparison to the competition. The best deal they offer is their 12-month subscription that'll run you $29/box, but they have six-, three-, and one-month plans as well, with the one-month plan running $39.

While we love the idea of planning boxes around development stages, we do wish that Pupbox offered a more cost-effective quarterly subscription seeing as their development stages are in 6 month periods. Pupbox also doesn't have a set structure on how many toys/treats/accessories they include in each box, other than saying 5-7 products come in each package.

What's included:

  • 5-7 developmentally appropriate toys/treats/accessories and a training pamphlet

Pooch Perks Dog Box

Getting subscription boxes for more than one dog can definitely get expensive, which is why we appreciate Pooch Perks so much. They include two treats, two to three toys, and one chew in each box. If you opt for their Pampered Pooch box, you'll get three treats, three to four toys, two chews, a roll of bathroom bags, and a fun accessory in each shipment.

Like so many other subscription boxes, Pooch Perks bases each month's shipment around a different theme, but they level up by going beyond the basic holiday toys and treats. Pooch Perks past themes have included European vacation, the Puppy Bowl, Shark Week, and so many other creative ideas.

While Pooch Perks will definitely save you money over buying two subscriptions from the same company, it is costlier for just one dog. The 12-month subscription is $33.17/month and the monthly box is $35. Sizing up to the Pampered Pooch box will also cost you — the one-year subscription is $49/box and the monthly subscription is $51.99. Like we said, cheaper than buying two boxes from the same brand, but more expensive for a single dog.

It's also important to note that the toys included in Pooch Perks' boxes are plush toys, AKA not well-suited for dogs that are tough on their toys. If you have a dog that's been known to destroy a toy in minutes, opt for the Bully Box instead.

What's included:

  • 2 treats
  • 2-3 toys

Best for the Budget

Pet Treater

Coming in as the most budget-friendly dog subscription on the market is Pet Treater. At just $15/month, you can get 3-4 toys and treats delivered straight to your door for your pup to enjoy. For just $3 more/month, you can even opt to get only toys or treats.

Unless you go for the toys- or treats-only subscription, what exactly you'll get in each box varies. It's safe to expect at least one toy and treat of some sort, and then two additional accessories, like dog shampoo or a piece of gear for yourself. Since there's no guarantee that you'll get multiple toys and treats in each box, this isn't a great option for families with more than one pooch. But, you could easily opt for two subscriptions for about the same price as some other boxes on this list.

In addition to sourcing their treats from mainly U.S.- and Canadian-based manufacturers, Pet Treater also includes the option for customized boxes for pets with peanut, chicken, and grain allergies. They also base their picks for toys on your dog's size, so you'll never have to worry about getting one that's too big or small for your precious pup.

While Pet Treater may not come with all the fancy features the other subscriptions on this list do, they're definitely the cheapest option on our list and a great pick for the average pup.
