According to a study released in The Lancet Global Health on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, Fluvoxamine, a cheap antidepressant, reduced the need for hospitalization among high-risk adults with COVID-19.

The Florida Department of Health reported 289,204 new coronavirus cases this week among Florida residents to bring the cumulative total to 5,280,903. With 605 more fatalities on record, 63,763 Florida residents have died.

This week’s 605 deaths reflect a decrease from the 470 reported last week, but deaths can take several days or weeks to be reported. The majority of the newly reported deaths are people who died before this week. The death count has not reached anywhere near September levels, where nearly 2,500 new deaths were reported multiple weeks in a row.

The number of weekly cases decreased by over 100,000 compared to the previous week’s 429,311. Positivity decreased to 26.8%. That’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive.

Of note, the state reports deal only with Florida resident cases and exclude non-residents cases, which are no longer available.

Across the state, 14,017 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 from Jan. 12-18, according to the latest White House report. In comparison, 14,020 were hospitalized the previous week. The week before that, it was 10,285. At the height of the summer surge of cases in August, nearly 17,000 were hospitalized with COVID-19.

Statewide, 15,141,101 residents, or 73% of people age 5 and up, have received at least one vaccination shot, including 8,234,285 who have completed their shot regimens through Jan. 20 and 115,852 who received an additional dose last week, bringing the total to 4,776,938.

Central Florida added 60,055 resident infections this week, based on the actual date the state opened the case, for a total of 1,024,865: 18,738 more in Orange for 338,531; 5,556 more in Osceola for 103,689; 10,833 more in Polk for 178,586; 4,358 more in Lake for 74,451; 1,024 more in Sumter for 18,500; 5,746 more in Volusia for 102,609; 7,966 more in Brevard for 116,349; and 5,834 more in Seminole for 92,150.
