MLB rumors: Ex-Yankees, Mets star Carlos Beltran has new gig within reach

The New York Mets hired Carlos Beltran as manager in November of 2019 and fired him two months later amid the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal.

The Carlos Beltran comeback tour could be headed to the Bronx.

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reports Beltran is a candidate to fill in for David Cone on YES Network, as the former ace joins ESPN for Sunday Night Baseball.

Beltran is among a group of analysts YES is looking at to pick up the games this season, provided, of course, there is a season. ... YES also has known interest in Cameron Maybin, Jeff Nelson and, already in-house John Flaherty, according to sources.

Beltran is familiar with the Big Apple baseball scene. The outfielder played for the New York Mets from 2005 to 2011 and the New York Yankees from 2014 to 2016. The nine-time All-Star ended his 20-year MLB career after helping the Houston Astros win the 2017 World Series.

And that’s where things began to go wrong for Beltran. He was the only player punished by MLB in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal. The Mets had hired Beltran as manager in November of 2019, but New York fired him two months later as details of Houston’s illegal use of electronic equipment were made public.

But there’s no doubting the 44-year-old’s baseball knowledge. Beltran was a three-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient, and he will make his debut on the National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot next year.
