Shout out to new mamas-to-be out there! I'm not there yet but I do know there's a lot to learn about everything. Even shopping for maternity clothes is totally different than what you're used to. (FYI, these maternity leggings are a godsend.) But if you thought putting together a pregnancy outfit was difficult, just wait until you get to the swimsuit section. As if finding a swimsuit that fits just right wasn't hard enough, your body is ever-changing and growing and your swimwear also needs to accommodate all of that. Yeah, challenging doesn't even begin to cover it. But we love overcoming obstacles, so we consulted the experts and flipped through online swimsuit racks to make the shopping process easier.

For starters, "expandability, durability, and longevity," are key factors to a great maternity swimsuit, says Chelsey Oliver, CCO of maternity brand Seraphine. "Look for high-quality, super-stretchy swimwear fabric that will last a long time and wash well, and straps that can be adjusted for better support," Oliver says. Nicole Trunfio, founder of Bumpsuit, also recommends adjustable features that “can be modified to your changing body; look for ties that can be tightened and loosened and fabric that feels supportive as your body and bump grows.”

Rave Review: "This swimsuit makes me feel so cute with my bump. It’s very plus-size friendly as I’m 5’7, 28 weeks pregnant, and weigh 298 lbs. The breast area is a little big on me but I’m still comfortable and cute in it. This suit has very thick material (which I love) and it's well made."

The only thing that can make a ruched swimsuit even better is a drawstring tie. Scrunch it up when you want a tighter fit or higher cut (and post-pregnancy), then let it out for a little more coverage and room to move around.

Bumpsuit The Monroe Swimsuit

Pros
  • so supportive
  • extremely glam silhouette
  • nursing-friendly!
Cons
  • wish it came in more colors

Kiss nursing woes goodbye with this knockout number with a plunging neckline. Whoever thought of these clever cups (which discretely open, no need to pull a strap down) is a genius! The sleek compression fabric accommodates and helps support your growing baby bump or postpartum belly. For larger bust sizes, the wider straps also offer more support.

Rave Review: "This suit is so stylish and very comfortable. I love the high cut style. This washes and dries with no shrinking. Perfect for summer & vacay."

Cons
  • top might not be nursing-friendly

Let's face it: One-pieces are a pain when you have to pee—and when you're pregnant, you have to pee a lot. A two-piece with super high-waist bottoms gives you all the same coverage and belly support but is much easier to peel off when you need to.

Rave Review: "This bikini is comfy and functional while still being totally on-trend. Go ahead and *add to cart*!"

Pros
  • true to size
  • side boob, if you're into it
  • full coverage fit
Cons
  • some say it's kinda see-through in the back

No one tells you how hard it is to reach clothing straps and ties when you're nine months pregnant, so you'll be happy to know this wrap swimsuit with a plunging neckline conveniently ties and secures in the front.

Rave Review: "I absolutely love this swimsuit. The amount of cleavage in the front is perfect. There is the perfect amount of room for my 7-month pregnant belly. The leg holes weren’t tight and uncomfortable like other swimsuits. There was a lot of coverage on the booty. I like how the back went very low. The tie feature in the front actually ties the swimsuit together and is super adjustable and flattering. It isn’t see-through AT ALL! The padding in the front isn’t visible like in some of my other swimsuits. There is an extra inner layer in the front but isn’t visible at all. I felt amazing in this swimsuit and highly recommend it!"

Best Lace-Up One-Piece

Summer Mae Maternity V Neck One Piece Swimsuit

Pros
  • truly adorbs
  • medium chest support
  • various vibrant color options
Cons
  • restrictive elastic around leg holes

With ruched sides and adjustable ties (are you sensing a couple of themes here?), this swimsuit has all the flexibility you want in a swimsuit to carry you from your first trimester to postpartum.

Rave Review: "This was the cutest, best fitting bathing suit out of the seven different brands and styles I tried from Amazon. There was room in the belly to grow but it doesn't look like a bunch of extra fabric. The ruching on the sides looks nice and clean. The chest is more supportive than others because it ties in the back and you control the tightness."

best strapless swimsuit

Cache Coeur Bow One-Piece Maternity Swimsuit

Pros
  • low back
  • quality material
  • fun bow detail
Cons
  • tricky back strap

Unlike other strapless one-pieces that constantly fall down, this one features a clasp in the back and removable, adjustable shoulder straps to make sure everything stays where it's supposed to.

Rave Review: "I am not the most confident in a swimsuit while pregnant but all of Cache Coeur’s suits made me feel like a million bucks. This one was my favorite. Classic, timeless, and low enough in the back that it doesn’t give you that long pregnancy butt look. I have a larger chest and this looked great. The only downside is fastening the back strap is tricky. But it is so gorgeous on that you don’t care."

The beauty of a smocked top (other than the way it looks) is how it grows and shrinks along with you, so it always fits just right. And since this one comes with ruched bottoms, you can rely on this suit to get you through your whole pregnancy.

Rave Review: "I'm always so skeptical of buying swimwear online, but now I want one in every style! These are so flattering! I didn't even expect to like the top (and had only purchased for the bottoms) but I was pleasantly surprised!"

Frequently asked questions:

ecomm line

Can you wear a regular swimsuit while pregnant?

Yes! You can definitely wear a regular swimsuit while pregnant—especially during the first trimester. Your trusty string bikinis can easily be adjusted to fit the bump, and some one-pieces with ruching or ties can also transition from pre-pregnancy to pregnancy to postpartum. But if you're finding that regular swimsuits feel uncomfortably tight or just don't provide enough support for your growing belly, it's probably time to purchase a soft, stretchy maternity swimsuit that'll feel more secure.

When should I start wearing maternity swimsuits?

Keep in mind that all bodies and bumps are different, so there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to what you should or shouldn't wear while pregnant! But most parents-to-be start showing during their second trimester, between 16 and 20 weeks, and wearing maternity swimsuits shortly after. Later on, some styles even have “extra features that mean your swimwear can be worn beyond your pregnancy journey,” Oliver says, like a nursing-friendly design:“If the swimsuit has easy access for breastfeeding, this will give you an extra reason to keep wearing after your baby is born!”

Should I wear a one-piece while pregnant?

You can wear a one-piece while pregnant, but you should wear whatever style of swimsuit you feel most comfortable in. One-pieces will provide the most all-over coverage, in addition to protecting your bump from the sun. Look for design details like adjustable shoulder straps, a tie-back, rushed sides, or ribbed fabric that'll help one-pieces fit comfortably over your belly.

Is it OK to wear a 2-piece while pregnant?

Um, absolutely! If you want to show off that beautiful bump, a two-piece is the move! “I love a traditional string bikini–it’s super adjustable on the top and bottom, and a classic, sexy style that always makes me feel good,” Trunfio says. “I also recommend buying tops and bottoms separately, so you can mix and match as your body changes.”

Here's what to look for if you're shopping for maternity swimsuits.

line

Good news: This part isn't as intimidating as it seems! If you're shopping for maternity swimsuits, check out their size charts (v accurate). And fun fact: many of these brands have sizing based off of your pre-bump size. Maternity bathing suits are literally designed to grow along your body so you and bb feel comfy at all times.

And the bump's evolving size isn't the only factor that might affect fit and sizing of swimwear: “Given fluctuating bust size during pregnancy, if you find yourself changing bikini tops, consider styling them with a chic high-waisted bottom” in a neutral that’s easy to mix and match, like black, Oliver recommends.
