The Maine Celtics — after seeing plenty of players picked off their roster this season — will add their most experienced player to the fold in the coming days. The team announced Friday it acquired Denzel Valentine off of waivers, with the former 14th overall pick expected to join the team Sunday.
Valentine, 28, started the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he played 22 games and averaged 2.9 points a game. He was also recently with the Jazz on a 10-day contract, and suited up in two games, but was not re-signed.
Valentine was drafted by the Bulls in the 2016 NBA Draft, though injuries have slowed his career. He had a standout four-year Michigan State career, breaking out as a senior and being named AP Player of the Year.
The Maine Celtics’ roster has been picked apart after teams signed multiple players to 10-day hardship exception contracts or other deals. Guys like Luke Kornet, Theo Pinson and others started the season in Portland, Maine, but they were signed elsewhere around the league.
It’s unclear how long Valentine will be with the Maine Celtics, but he should bring in much-needed experience to the squad.
