Real Madrid icon Marcelo was sent off for a last-man foul during Thursday’s dramatic 2-1 win against Elche, and the call is highly debatable. To make matters worse, Marcelo has been officially awarded a three-match suspension by RFEF, which will see him miss the quarter-finals against Athletic Bilbao and the two legs of a potential semi-final.

Captain Marcelo should’ve been suspended only for one game, but he has been handed an additional suspension of two games because he said this to the referee of the game:

"“You are bad.”"

Honestly, every person who saw yesterday’s match would say the same thing to the referee and the VAR, whose presence is still a question mark. The referee sent off Marcelo in the 102nd when the scoreline was 0-0 for a last-man challenge on Tete Morente. The referee didn’t even consult VAR and brandished a red to the Brazilian as soon as Morente made a theatrical dive on the pitch. And to rub salt on the wounds, Elche scored from the subsequent free-kick that was awarded to them.

But in reality, it was a clean challenge from the no. 12 and he clearly won the ball as visible in the replays. Forget the question of it being a red card, it wasn’t even a foul.

Real Madrid had to deal with another bad call in this Copa del Rey match

When a referee makes such a shambolic decision, then he completely deserves to be seen as a bad referee. Some can say that Marcelo shouldn’t have lost control of his tongue in a heated moment, but what Marcelo said is 100% right, and anyone would have said the same after looking at the yellow card awarded to Toni Kroos in a separate incident of a ghost tackle on Raul Guti. Have a look at that foul, and also have a look at Kroos’ sarcastic reaction which pretty much sums up everything.

The decision from RFEF to suspend Marcelo for three games makes it nothing but a disgrace. And the fact that RFEF didn’t even bat an eye to Real Madrid’s rightful challenge against the controversial calls of the Elche game just proves how ignorant and disrespectful the people with power have been.

Thanks to Isco, Dani Ceballos, and Eden Hazard, Real Madrid won this game despite facing an uphill task. If not, this could’ve been another one of those nights that have been ruined by a referee mistake.

And this is not the first time that Real Madrid has been affected by the referees in the last year and a half. Some people who try to fight against Real Madrid on Twitter more than they do on the pitch might think otherwise, but there is statistical evidence to prove that Real Madrid have never been favoured by referees and have actually been at the receiving end of several wrong calls.
