LA Galaxy acquire midfielder Mark Delgado from Toronto FC

LOS ANGELES (Friday, Jan. 21, 2022) – The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has acquired midfielder Mark Delgado from Toronto FC in exchange for $400,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM) and a conditional $100,000 in 2023 GAM if certain performance metrics are met. Delgado will be signed to a three-year contract through the end of the 2024 MLS regular season using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) with a club option for 2025 pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

Delgado, 26, joins the Galaxy after totaling 17 goals and 21 assists in 225 games played (199 starts) across all competitions in seven seasons for Toronto FC (2015-21). Notably, Delgado was part of the treble-winning Toronto FC side that claimed the Canadian Championship, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in 2017 under LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. Delgado helped Toronto lift an additional two Canadian Championships (2016, 2018), and helped the club reach the final of the 2018 Concacaf Champions League. In his 10-year career in MLS, Delgado has notched 17 goals and 24 assists in 218 regular-season appearances (187 starts).

Last season, Delgado tallied three goals and two assists in 30 games played (27 starts) in league play for Toronto in 2021. In 2019, when Toronto reached the MLS Cup final, Delgado posted a career-high seven assists and added two goals in 30 regular-season appearances (29 starts). During the 2018 campaign, the Glendora, Calif., native helped Toronto FC lift the Canadian Championship, in addition to posting two goals and two assists in 28 MLS regular-season appearances (21 starts). Delgado notched a career-high three goals and added five assists in 26 regular-season appearances (25 starts) during Toronto FC’s treble-winning campaign in 2017.

“Mark is an experienced player in this league who has won championships,” said LA Galaxy Technical Director Jovan Kirovski. “We are looking forward to having him with us as he enters the prime of his career.”

In his first season with Toronto in 2015, after joining the club from Chivas USA in the 2014 MLS Dispersal Draft, Delgado tallied three goals and three assists in 20 regular-season games played (19 starts). Delgado, who signed a homegrown player contract with Chivas USA in 2012, made 37 appearances (15 starts) and added two goals and two assists in three seasons (2012-14) for the defunct franchise.

At the international level, Delgado has made six appearances (3 starts) for the United States Men’s National Team, since starting and playing 86 minutes in his debut in a 1-0 win over Paraguay on March 27, 2018. In his last appearance for the USMNT, Delgado started and played 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Peru on Oct. 16, 2018.
