This weekend is the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that made abortion a constitutional right.
This year, the anniversary occurs as the fight over abortion heats up across the U.S.
In Florida, a bill that would ban abortions after 15-weeks passed its first hurtle on Wednesday, advancing out of a House subcommittee on a party line vote. Twelve Republicans voted to move the bill onto its next step, while six Democrats voted against the bill.
If the Supreme Court upholds similar restrictive legislation in Mississippi, it would pave the way for Florida’s bill and several others to pass.
Critics fear that if that happens, this could be the final anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
“If Roe falls, 28 states would likely take action to prohibit abortion,” Mini Timmaraju, the President of NARAL Pro-Choice America said in a press conference.
