‘Now, the work begins’: Giants new GM Joe Schoen on his plans for finding Joe Judge’s replacement

Former Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen has been hired as Dave Gettleman's replacement as New York Giants general manager.

New Giants GM Joe Schoen doesn’t have much time to waste when it comes cleaning up the mess of his predecessor, Dave Gettleman.

Schoen, who was hired Friday, will need to cut through the muck that Gettleman left behind — including a terrible cap situation, a disenchanted roster and a quarterback conundrum — after finding his most important partner: a new head coach.

Schoen spent the past few years working with Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll — two popular candidates in the head-coaching cycle — but the new chief decision-maker says he wants to open up the interview process to a wide array of candidates in order to properly replace Joe Judge.

“Now, the work begins,” Schoen said in a team-issued press release. “My immediate focus is to hire a head coach, with who I will work in lockstep with to create a collaborative environment for our football operations. We will cast a wide net, it can be former head coaches, first-time head coaches but, more importantly, it has to be a person who possesses the ability to lead an organization and the ability to motivate and develop players.”

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants plan to reach out to Daboll, former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores and Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, among others.

Along with the head-coaching search, Schoen needs to get to work on fixing the Giants’ lowly cap situation. According to Over The Cap, the Giants are projected to be $6.9 million over the salary cap at entering the offseason. Only the Saints, Packers, Cowboys and Vikings have worse cap situations, and all four teams doubled the Giants’ win total in 2021.

Schoen plans to prioritize roster-building immediately.

“On the personnel side, we will begin to evaluate our roster and prepare for the draft and free agency,” Schoen said. “Our goal is to build a roster that will be competitive, have depth, and most importantly, win football games.”
