Techland has just announced that there will be Dying Light 2 next-gen upgrades the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One players to the Xbox Series X and Series S. While that's exciting enough for those who have been waiting for Dying Light 2 for so long, Techland has also announced that players will not be able to participate in a cross-platform and cross-generation console cooperative experience at launch.

PC players on Steam and Epic Game Store platforms will be able to do so, however, which makes sense considering it's going to be one unified version for PC. The console versions are probably going to be tricky to get right, especially if Techland is determined to ensure the same experience on last and next-gen consoles.

While console players are still probably hyped to get in on that Dying Light 2 PS5 and Dying Light 2 Xbox Series X action despite this news, there's a few more caveats for the cooperative experience whenever it's enabled:

  • Dying Light 2 will be fully playable in co-op in everything but the prologue. This also includes finishing the game.
  • All guests in the co-op session will keep their gained items and player's progression.
  • Important choices made in-game will be done through a vote, but the host of the session will get to make the final choice.

Even for someone like me who is totally over zombies this sounds pretty interesting. Not enough for me to drop 90 Canadian dollarydoos on it, but enough that I will be checking out reviews and seeing how mechanics like parkour work when not carefully curated by Techland.

Dying Light 2 has also reached 3 million wishlists on Steam, which is a fairly solid indicator that people are ready to beat zombies to death over its long campaign.
