How Man Utd could line up against West Ham with Cristiano Ronaldo an injury doubt with neck issue after Brentford strop

MANCHESTER UNITED star Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt to start against West Ham as he battles a neck injury.

The 36-year-old was already a question mark to be in the line-up after he threw a strop and exchanged words with interim boss Ralf Rangnick on Wednesday night.

This is how Manchester United could line-up against West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday

Ronaldo was visibly upset after being substituted during the 3-1 win against Brentford, with Rangnick letting it slip he questioned why one of the younger players in the team wasn't replaced instead of him.

The ex-RB Leipzig manager insisted he subbed Ronaldo for tactical reasons in the wake of United's 2-2 draw away at Aston Villa, letting a 2-0 lead slip late on.

But now the Portugal international is facing a race against time to start, with Rangnick revealing he is battling a neck issue.

He told MUTV: "Cristiano is a question mark because he has a problem with his neck.

“He received treatment yesterday for two-three hours and we will have to wait to see how he feels today."

With United to be without a number of players for the clash against the Hammers, it is unlikely the five-time Ballon d'Or winner will be dropped if he declares himself fit.

One of those squad members that will play no part in the game at Old Trafford is Victor Lindelof, who will miss the fixture due to personal reasons after a break-in at his home.

Lindelof's partner and their two young children were forced to hide and lock themselves in a room while thugs raided their house.

Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho remains a major doubt after attending the funeral of a close family member earlier in the week.

Full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw are still out, with Edinson Cavani another player that could miss the game.

David de Gea will retain his place between the sticks, with the Spanish goalkeeper arguably the club's Player of the Season already.

Diogo Dalot should keep his spot in the absence of Wan-Bissaka, while Alex Telles will slot in at left-back.

Raphael Varane could partner skipper Harry Maguire, with the England international to be recalled into the line-up as a result of Lindelof missing out.

A central midfield pairing of Scott McTominay and Fred looks the most likely option, with Bruno Fernandes deployed in the No10 position.

Mason Greenwood could start on the ring wing, with Anthony Elanga featuring on the opposite flank.

And Ronaldo would then be tasked with leading the line with United knowing a win will see them leapfrog West Ham in the table.
