Southbound Highway 99 in Sacramento has reopened hours after a wrong-way crash killed an Elk Grove officer Friday morning. The officer was riding a motorcycle on his way to work along southbound Hwy. 99 near 47th Avenue around 5:15 a.m. when he was hit by the wrong-way driver, Police Chief Timothy Albright said during a briefing.Personnel from the California Highway Patrol, area fire departments and medical staff worked tirelessly to save the officer, later identified as Ty Lenehan, Albright said. The officer was transported to UC Davis Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.Lenehan, a U.S. Air Force veteran, began his law enforcement career with the Citrus Heights Police Department. He would later join the Galt Police Department before ultimately joining Elk Grove's police force in 2016. Albright said Lenehan fulfilled his dream when he became a motor officer in 2020.Lenehan is survived by his wife and two children."Officer 'Ty' will be remembered for his infectious smile, his genuine and loyal heart, and his love for his God, his family, his profession and his community," Albright said. "While we breathe and mourn together, we will remember together the sacrifice of Ofc. Tyler 'Ty' Lenehan." The other driver involved, identified as 31-year-old Jermain J. Walton, of Sacramento, was arrested under suspicion of DUI, and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on several felony DUI-related charges.Sacramento County Court records show Walton received a previous DUI charge in 2018 he pled no contest to. He was sentenced to informal probation.A large group of people from law enforcement agencies across the area gathered at UC Davis Medical Center where the officer was being treated Friday morning before their death was announced.Squad cars from departments representing Elk Grove, Woodland, Davis, and Sacramento were there to show support for the officer, KCRA 3's Erin Heft reported. Motorcade officers later escorted the officer's body to the coroner's office. "It's an incredibly sad day for our organization, for our family, for the Elk Grove Community and for the law enforcement profession," Albright said.Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen said the community was in mourning and "we are heartbroken."
