Denver Broncos sale? Robert F. Smith pops up as potential buyer

The Denver Broncos are set for an important offseason that could have a major impact on their franchise. We’re not talking about finding a head coach to take over for the now-fired Vic Fangio or finding a franchise quarterback. Instead, it’s much bigger.

Sometime over the next few months, the Broncos are expected to be put up for sale. Previously it was noted that former Broncos legends John Elway and Peyton Manning could look to get involved in the bidding process, but there are roughly six groups preparing to pursue a purchase.

One of those groups is led by Robert F. Smith, a local Denver native, who is one of the richest people in the USA. According to Front Office Sports, Smith has emerged as a potential bidder for what is expected to be the most expensive team sale in U.S. sports history.

Robert F. Smith could make history with Denver Broncos purchase

If Smith were to eventually buy the Broncos, he would become the first Black majority owner in the history of the NFL.

Smith has a net worth of $6.7 billion, which gives him more than enough scratch to make a bid. Some speculate the Broncos could sell for $4 billion or more. Smith would reportedly need to purchase at least 30% of the franchise to make it happen, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. To do so, Smith would need to cough up a minimum of $1.3 billion out of his own pockets to qualify.

According to Forbes, Smith ranks as the richest Black person in America. In case we haven’t figured it out yet, no, Robert Smith is not the same as the former Ohio State running back who went on to play eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

No, this Robert F. Smith is well-known for founding Vista Equity Partners back in 2000, where he still serves as the CEO and company chairman. Next, he could become well-known for becoming the next majority owner of the Denver Broncos.
