Pelham (Brett Dalton) has not had an easy introduction to the lieutenant role. In the short time that he’s been in charge, he’s had to deal with the dislike of his superiors and their underhanded attempts to get him fired.

Given the fact that Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) had to step in for Pelham during the latest episode, there’s definitely reason to think that maybe the character isn’t going to be sticking around for the long haul.

Here’s a rundown of Pelham’s future and whether he plans to exit anytime soon.

Is Brett Dalton leaving Chicago Fire?

Fortunately, for Pelham fans, the lieutenant isn’t going anywhere in season 10. The show has confirmed that the character is going to continue to hold down the 51 for the next handful of episodes, and will actually be an integral part of their plot lines.

This structural decision makes sense, given the closeness that’s developed between Pelham and the rest of the 51 squad. Severide has been supportive of Pelham’s leadership, and even Kidd, who some may have thought would’ve disliked him, has been glowing in her comments towards him. Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas spilled on Pelham’s future during a recent interview with TV Guide.

"“What about this lieutenant spot that was on Truck 81 and she didn’t come and claim it and now the spot has been claimed by Pelham?”, he rhetorically asked. “So, those are two things that can drive the plots of upcoming episodes, and so you’ll be seeing more of that.”"

Pelham’s involvement with the show is pretty ironclad, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that his stint at lieutenant is secure. It’s possible that the character could lose his lieutenant ranking in the wake of the controversy surrounding Chief Kilbourne (Jack Conley).

The writers hinted at a possible swap with Pelham and Kidd by having the latter step into the role of lieutenant for a single episode. Kidd won praise from the firehouse for her instincts and natural command skills, and while she assured Pelham that she wasn’t gunning for his job, he told her that she would make a great lieutenant.

It’s a definite possibility that Pelham could be demoted at some point in the future, but still be involved with the 51 in a lesser capacity. He’s a well-liked and solid member of the team, but the push for Kidd to take over seems to be a germ of an idea that’s still gaining traction.
