Toyota has continually been teasing its upcoming GR Corolla hot hatch over the past few months, but over at the Asia Pacific region, the Corolla sedan has been given the Gazoo Racing treatment. It is, however, not the performance Corolla you were probably expecting.

Making its first appearance in Thailand, the new Toyota Corolla GR Sport is based on the standard sedan (which is called the Corolla Altis in Southeast Asia). Europe also has its own version with their Corolla hatch as well. This isn't the first time that the Corolla sedan has received the GR treatment, though. The first Corolla Altis GR Sport made its debut three years ago, but the Japanese automaker has decided that it needs a new look this time around.

The most obvious change for the 2022 Corolla GR Sport would be its new front fascia. Toyota has given it a completely new front bumper that gives its front end a wider lower air intake and slimmer triangular faux side vents. As a result, the Corolla GR Sport looks very similar to the refreshed Camry.

As for the rest of the vehicle, the side skirts and rear bumper have also been slightly redesigned. Of course, a number of obligatory GR Sport badges have been strategically placed around the vehicle. It still rides on the same 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels as before.

Moving inside, the Toyota Corolla GR sport gains a host of new red interior trims in lieu of the standard Corolla's satin silver finishes. Blue ambient LED lighting has also been added in the doors and center console, while the seats have been given red stitching to complement the various red interior bits. Also exclusive to the Corolla GR Sport are paddle shifters, which the standard model doesn't get. A new head-up display also debuts in the 2022 Corolla Altis for the Asia Pacific region as well

As for engines, the Toyota Corolla GR Sport comes in two flavors in Southeast Asia, both of which are 1.8-liters in displacement and are available in the North American Corolla. The first one produces 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque, while the second one is a hybrid mill that has a total system output of 121 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. Both engines power the front wheels via a CVT.

Toyota didn't just give the Corolla GR Sport a new body kit and simply called it a day. For improved handling, the Corolla GR Sport comes with new shock absorbers, springs, and a rear stabilizer bar for flatter cornering.

The Toyota Corolla Altis GR Sport is now on sale in Thailand for THB1,059,000 (around $32,125) for the non-hybrid model and THB1,114,000 (around $33,795) for the hybrid version. Just a few weeks ago, Toyota has also unveiled a GR Sport version for the European market Hilux, and it seems the Japanese automaker isn't shy to apply the GR Sport treatment to other mainstream vehicles as well.
