MHS makes late move to defeat Ames on the mats

AMES — The Marshalltown High School wrestling team surrendered three forfeits but still found a way around Ames for a 40-36 victory in Thursday’s CIML Iowa Conference dual.

The Bobcats won seven of the 10 contested matches while also receiving one forfeit from the Little Cyclones. All three match wins for Ames came by fall, helping the hosts capture a 30-21 lead with five matches remaining.

Marshalltown claimed four straight wins to put the dual meet out of reach, starting with Nick Rebik’s 16-6 major decision over Briar Fitz at 170 pounds. Johan Gomez kept it rolling for the Bobcats with a first-period pin of J.J. Wilhite at 182, and Michael Narvaez-Correa brought the Bobcat to the brink of clinching the win with a 5-1 decision over Josh Grey at 195.

Marshalltown’s lone ranked wrestler, Gannon Williams, got the job done by finishing off Brett Burkheimer by pinfall in 2 minutes, 28 seconds, to give the Bobcats a 10-point lead with one match remaining. Williams is rated 10th in Class 3A by IAwrestle.

The Bobcats then forfeited to No. 6 Kyler Hall of Ames at heavyweight, ending the dual.

Lucas Bantz kicked off the meet with a second-period pin of Greta Goodman at 106, and Damien Rodriguez got a 4-2 decision over Cole Martin at 120. Xayvion Anderson received a forfeit at 126, and Luke Hageman added a pin of Sam Thach at 138 to give Marshalltown an early 21-12 lead.

The Little Cyclones scored the next 18 points to take a 30-21 lead, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Bobcats.

Marshalltown returns to action on Saturday at the six-team Des Moines Lincoln Tournament.
