Metropolitan Opera Announces Cast Change for ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’

The Welsh National Opera Youth Opera has announced its cast for its 2022 productions. First up will be Judith Weir’s “The Black Spider.”. The work will star Tomo Jones and Mica Smith as Count Heinrich; Ffion Morgan Short and Rhianna Hogg as Christina; Euan McEvoy as Carl; and Owen Parson and Toben Durrant sharing the role of Casper. Dan Perkin will conduct with Rhian Hutchings directing.

Legendary mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza has passed away. She was 89. Born on March 16, 1933, Berganza started off her musical journey studying piano (she also studied cello and organ, among other instruments) and voice at the Madrid Conservatory, where won the first prize for singing in 1954. The Finnish maestro started off his career at age 14, working with conductor Jorma Panulu. In 2017, he debuted with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen where, earlier this year, he was named the ensemble’s first-ever principal guest conductor.

This week audiences will get a chance to hear three complete recordings of three very diverse operas. Here is a look at this week’s releases. Navona Records presents “Hamlet” by Joseph Summer. In this installment of the Shakespeare Concert Series, composer Joseph Summer’s adaptation of the famous play is performed by Bulgaria’s State Opera Ruse orchestra, choir, and selected Bulgarian soloists with nine international soloists singing the lead roles. The cast is led by Omar Najmi, Brianna Robinson, Kevin Thompson, Evan Bravos, Michelle Trainor, Katherine Pracht, and Neal Ferreira.
