Man Waving Knife Behind Walgreens

Española City Police officers responded at 2:30 p.m., Monday to a report of a man waving a knife at people behind Walgreens. This gentleman was not the alleged knife-waver and didn’t fit the description. However, he had an outstanding warrant and was arrested.

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

Reckless on Riverside

Jan. 2

6:25 a.m. A caller said he picked up a woman between Gallina and Coyote and she told him she didn’t need an ambulance and just wanted a ride to Gallina. She also said she stole her mother’s truck.

7:14 a.m. A Lotaburger manager said a man who had been trespassed was in a sleeping bag by the north entrance. He wanted him removed.

10:47 a.m. A caller requested that more officers patrol the streets because there were too many reckless drivers on North Riverside drive, from the north end to the south end of the city.

11:51 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a woman on La Joya Street because a report was made with Adult Protective Services after her caretakers allegedly quit last week.

1:55 p.m. A man who was driving while under the influence, flipped his car in Medanales.

7:01 p.m. A security guard at the Santa Clara Apartments said someone threw a rock at a window and broke it. When he went to investigate the broken window incident, he found a woman asleep on the pool table.

7:42 p.m. A Vista del Rio Apartments caller reported there was someone in a dead man’s apartment and no one was supposed to be there.

7:54 p.m. A Dixon caller reported a vehicle was flipped over.

9:08 p.m. A Walgreens employee said the guys that had stolen propane in the past were outside.

Bad trip

Jan. 3

12:21 a.m. A County Road 87 in Chimayó caller wanted an officer to go out because a truck was doing donuts in the arroyo and nearly hit the caller’s fence three times.

3:13 a.m. A Harley Lane caller said a man was throwing rocks at houses.

6:13 a.m. A Chama caller reported people were harassing him and hitting his vehicle.

9:15 a.m. A Calle Redonda caller said three of her vehicles were broken into, after the doors were left unlocked.

9:20 a.m. A Chama caller reported there was an injured elk in the middle of a field.

10:48 a.m. An El Rito caller reported finding her 87-year-old neighbor unconscious and cold to the touch.

12:27 p.m. A Santa Clara Apartments caller requested courtesy rounds while he left his apartment for 40 minutes because he was afraid someone would break in.

1:09 p.m. A County Road 55 in Alcalde caller said her door was chipped, as if someone tried to pry it open.

2:27 p.m. A CVS caller reported a man was slumped over on the sidewalk.

2:35 p.m. A Food King caller said a man’s face and arms were covered in blood and he was asking for help.

3:04 p.m. A County Road 137B in Alcalde caller reported someone broke into his house and stole antiques and two TVs.

3:15 p.m. An Abiquiú caller said a man was at her house, using drugs and hallucinating. She said he attacked her five-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son.

3:28 p.m. An Alcalde caller said a construction crew was digging and hit a gas line and they could hear gas coming out.

5 p.m. A Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputy requested assistance because a vehicle went head-on with his unit near Coyote.

8:12 p.m. A Walmart security guard requested a welfare check on a little girl, who was inside a car, with a dog.

8:30 p.m. A Santa Claran Casino caller said some people she thought were drunk were calling her names and harassing her. She also said they followed her.

11:34 p.m. A La Mesilla caller reported a car traveling at a high rate of speed and being reckless.

Jan. 4

1:55 a.m. A Private Drive 1612A in Medanales caller said someone on a four-wheeler was shooting off guns.

8:44 a.m. A caller reported a man was walking down Paseo de Oñate and he was holding a gun.

9:18 a.m. A County Road 41A in Alcalde caller wanted to file a report because the neighbor beat up her boyfriend.

9:30 a.m. A Vista Pointe Court caller said someone took her debit card at Walmart a couple days ago and used it all around town, charging $284, plus overdraft fees.

9:35 a.m. A caller reported a picnic table was stolen from the Ranchitos park.

10:11 a.m. A Shadowood Lane caller reported a 31-year-old man was possibly overdosing on heroin. It was determined he was possibly having a seizure, he wasn’t overdosing.

11:41 a.m. A County Road 41 in Velarde caller reported he was getting threatening telemarketing calls.

12:29 p.m. An assault was reported at Española Valley High School.

12:42 p.m. An Ohkay Express Mart caller said her friend got a call saying her daughter was in an accident and was being held by the cartel. Police determined it was a scam and the call came from a number in Mexico.

1:57 p.m. A North Paseo de Oñate caller said a man punched her in the face and was yelling at a three-year-old child. She said she was bleeding from the face and needed an ambulance.

3:26 p.m. A South McCurdy Road and State Road 76 caller reported an SUV almost side-swiped him and other vehicles.

4:20 p.m. An Ohkay Travel Center caller said a man was on the ground by the dumpster and appeared to have urinated on himself and he was shaking.

4:52 p.m. A Calle Sin Nombre caller reported her father received a call from someone demanding money and claiming that she’d been kidnapped. She said her dad went to Walmart and wired the caller $1,000, but she wasn’t kidnapped.

7:38 p.m. A Grove Avenue in Chama caller said there was a bunch of “clowns” causing a nuisance and kicking his truck and window.

8:08 p.m. A Vallecitos caller said her 38-year-old bipolar son was threatening to hurt his brother. She said the man was on medication, but he had been drinking.

8:40 p.m. A Vista del Rio Apartments caller said a man in the second building was threatening to kill his mom.

Suspicious new toy

Jan. 5

12:06 a.m. A Milagro Village Mobile Home Park caller reported her ex-boyfriend kicked her door and cracked it. She said he had been going into her house when she was not there.

10:06 a.m. A North Monterey Lane caller reported his mother wanted a group of homeless people removed because they were hanging around her house.

10:19 a.m. A Birch Lane caller said a man and woman were physically fighting in the middle of the road.

10:41 a.m. An Avenida Cañada caller reported her neighbor was making a lot of noise and pounding on the walls. She said when she asked her what’s wrong, the woman yelled at her and threated to pull a gun on her.

12:03 p.m. A State Road 581 in Española caller said someone broke into her father’s house and stole a wallet with $40 in it.

12:26 p.m. A Po Pay Avenue and Jackrabbit Trail caller reported a man was walking around his yard, looking into cars.

1:41 p.m. A Camino Arbolera caller reported getting an email in which a student was threatened.

1:44 p.m. A student was in possession of narcotics at Española Valley High School.

3:54 p.m. A Lumberton caller said his son was breaking the windows and letting the air out of his tires.

4:18 p.m. A Private Drive 1318 in Chimayó caller reported her son came home with a new toy car that was given to him by a random woman at the bus stop and she wanted to speak with a deputy.

5:49 p.m. A Fairview Lane and North McCurdy Road caller requested assistance in walking home because he said he couldn’t get past some dogs.

10:55 p.m. A Days Inn caller said he wanted to speak with an officer regarding his identity being stolen, but he didn’t want certain officers from the city, county or state to respond, because they were under investigation and he knows his rights.

11:11 p.m. A County Road 94 in Chimayó caller reported a man was unconscious and not breathing and didn’t have a pulse.

11:24 p.m. A Pathways Shelter caller said there were people on the roof and she told them to get down, but they wouldn’t listen.

Eavesdropping on neighbors

Jan. 6

2:21 a.m. An Abiquiú caller reported hearing either shots or an explosion and said she couldn’t see lights at the Family Dollar. State Police determined a rock was thrown through the store’s window.

7:52 a.m. A NM Bank and Trust caller said a man was lying in front of the door and saying he was hurt.

8:45 a.m. A McCurdy Charter School student was reported to have a notebook with a hit list in it. 

10:53 a.m. The Española fire chief said a woman was in the lobby at city hall and was nodding off.

11:35 a.m. A Taos Lane caller reported three people were beating up her niece.

12:01 p.m. A caller reported an SUV was driving recklessly, went off the roadway and “threw” gravel that broke his windshield.

12:16 p.m. A student was reported to be in possession of a wax THC pen at Española Valley High School.

1:20 p.m. A Walmart caller said a man who was known for pulling a knife on employees, tried to run into the store.

2:11 p.m. A Walmart caller reported an irate customer was verbally abusing a security guard.

4:35 p.m. A Truchas caller said a woman was outside her house, banging on the windows. 

4:38 p.m. A Cook’s Mobile Home Park caller reported her neighbor’s dog just killed her dog.

8:43 p.m. A Santa Clara Apartments caller reported that he could hear through the walls, that a woman was being held against her will.

9:21 p.m. A Las Lomas Apartments caller said a man put a gun to her face, then left in a car.

10:50 p.m. An Ojo Caliente caller said a man in a Cadillac was selling crystal meth out of his vehicle and there was a lot of foot traffic.

KFC employee stalked

Jan. 7

12:12 a.m. A Las Lomas Apartments caller complained about loud music and said this was the second time someone had told the neighbors to turn it down.

12:34 a.m. A Calle Duran caller reported a woman threatened to break his windows.

3:55 a.m. The Calle Duran caller from earlier phoned again and said the woman that threatened to break her windows followed through and she’s on the way back to her house.

9:15 a.m. A Crisis Center of New Mexico caller reported pipes and a marijuana joint were found in a room and she wanted to turn them over to officers.

10:28 a.m. A caller said a woman was fired three weeks ago, from KFC and she had been parking across the street in front of Ortega’s and was watching him.

12:26 p.m. A Santa Clara Apartments caller said there were people outside his apartment, who were threatening to kill him.

1:04 p.m. A Rio Rancho caller reported her daughter and a man stole her credit card and used it at Allsup’s in Española.

2:28 p.m. A West Shadowood Lane caller said she had been feeding four stray dogs but now she wanted them removed because two were starting to foam at the mouth.

3:05 p.m. An Aspen Urgent Care caller reported a man was walking around, panhandling and harassing people for money.

3:13 p.m. A caller said her father purchased 12 gift cards from Walmart in the middle of December. When the gift cards were going to be used, it was discovered that eight of the 12 had a zero balance and were not active.

3:36 p.m. A 420 Emporia caller reported a man was in the store and was high. He was yelling at customers and said he almost slit his wife’s throat.

3:43 p.m. An El Camino de Garcia caller said a drunk woman jumped into his car.

3:45 p.m. A Ferrell Gas caller reported homeless people were setting up camp behind the storage and were taking mattresses back there.

4:03 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a woman on the ground near the Holy Cross Church.

4:36 p.m. A Calle Duran caller said a woman broke her windows and was threatening her. She texted her and said they were all dead and she knows when officers leave.

4:56 p.m. A County Road 1 in Hernandez caller reported he got into a fight with a man. He said the man hit him first and he was defending himself.

5:35 p.m. An Alcalde caller said her sister was at her house, being verbally abusive, yelling, hitting her and pulling her hair.

7:14 p.m. A Salas Auto Body caller reported people were behind his business getting high or something and setting off his motion cameras.

8:15 p.m. A Victory Faith Church caller said his ex-girlfriend kicked his door and dented it and now she was in the church.

10:30 p.m. An Española City Police officer was involved in a vehicle pursuit that ended when the vehicle he was chasing crashed.

Jan. 8

1:24 a.m. A Camino Cielo Grande caller said her mother was very drunk and tried stabbing her son and now she was vomiting blood.

1:53 a.m. A Club Tropicana caller reported several fights were happening, but when police did a walk-through, they found no one fighting.

7:37 a.m. A Salas Auto Body caller reported a man was smoking something off a foil, behind the building. He could see him on camera.

11:51 a.m. A Lower San Pedro Road caller requested a welfare check on a man lying in the road.

12:31 a.m. A County Road 40 in Alcalde caller said she believed her “druggy” neighbors were conducting an illegal act.

2:03 p.m. A West Calle Archuleta caller reported a 45-year-old man was sleeping and now he was not breathing. She thought he was dead. The man was dead.

2:50 p.m. A Pinch Penny Laundromat caller said two men were physically fighting outside.

7:29 p.m. An Ohkay Express Mart caller reported they were in an RV and his mom was acting dumb. The mother told officers her son was disrespecting her and she caught him in the RV with a woman.

10:48 p.m. A North Orchard Lane caller said someone was playing a boombox loudly and it had been going on for the past six months.
