Gloves are winter’s most underrated accessory. When cold weather strikes, coat shopping shoots to the top of our to-do lists, with boot shopping falling close behind. But the urge to find a quality pair of thick, insulated, touchscreen-friendly gloves often falls to the wayside. Then, when it’s time to shovel the driveway in subzero temperatures, we’re digging out the same old raggedy pair and cursing ourselves for not investing in a better set sooner.

We’ve done some research to find the best winter gloves online. All you have to do is determine your needs and scroll through the below list to find the best pair for you. That way, you’ll have a solid set (or two) to keep your hands warm and windburn-free this winter.

How to choose the best winter gloves

“The most important thing is to find a pair of gloves that fit well and feel comfortable. They should also keep your hands dry,” says Lana Pinchasov, PA-C, medical science liaison of dermatology at Eli Lilly Company. “Wet gloves can irritate the skin underneath, so if you’ll be getting your hands wet, be sure to choose a waterproof glove option.”

Your gloves also shouldn’t allow air or wind to penetrate, says Dendy Engelman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. This can cause moisture to escape, which leads to dry, irritated skin. With that said, here are the best materials to look for in a pair of winter gloves.

  • 3M thinsulate material traps heat and is breathable and moisture-resistant, Pinchasov says.
  • Leather, cashmere, and fleece offer different levels of warmth and cold protection.
  • Thermal gloves have two layers: the insulated material on the inside for warmth and a durable outer layer.
  • Nylon in gloves keeps the cold out and the warmth in while offering better grip, Dr. Engelman says.

Before you slip on a pair, don’t forget one crucial step: “A trick I like to tell my patients is to first apply a thicker moisturizer to provide an extra barrier before putting gloves on,” Dr. Engelman says.

Ahead, we found the best winter gloves made with waterproof material and moisture-wicking fabrics fit for skiing, running, and other outdoor winter activities, as well as functional pairs for everyday wear.
