Otero County could see a frosty weekend. Snow and rain predicted in the mountains

U.S. Highway 82 was slick in spots from White Sands Boulevard through High rolls and Cloudcroft on Jan. 20.

A winter storm came through Otero County leaving some rain and snow in the lower elevations and accumulated snow in the higher elevations.

The Otero County Road Department had plows on the Sacramento Mountains Thursday morning to make the roads passable.

New Mexico Department of Transportation were also running plows along U.S. Highway 82 throughout the day on Jan. 20.

Alamogordo Public Schools bus routes were closed Thursday morning in the High Rolls and Mountain Park areas due to the weather conditions and the students the local elementary school were taught virtually.

The weather cleared up in Alamogordo and Cloudcroft Thursday afternoon with clear skies and cool temperatures in Alamogordo and cold temperatures in Cloudcroft lasting through Friday with a chance of snow and rain over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service-El Paso.

Friday and Saturday were both forecast as sunny to mostly sunny with a high of 51 degrees.

A slight chance of snow and showers was reported Saturday night with a low of 27 degrees, while Sunday also saw a chance of snowfall day and night and rain with a high of 50 degrees and low of 28. 

Conditions were expected to clear on Monday, which was forecast as sunny with a high of 54 degrees.

A hazardous weather outlook was issued by the National Weather Service for portions of south central and southwest New Mexico and for southwest Texas. 

"Light rain and snow showers may lead to slick roads early this morning. Snow amounts in the Sacramento Mountains will be between 2 to 4 inches, which will result in difficult travel conditions," read the outlook. "Drivers should be careful while driving in in slick roads. Allow for some extra time before heading out this morning if you are in areas that received snow overnight."
