This weekly mini-series compares the aligned launch sales of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

It should be noted the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S had a worldwide launch, while the PlayStation 5 launch was split over the course of two weeks. Also, the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched during the holidays in November 2020.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Global:

  1. PS5: 18,006,678
  2. Switch: 16,469,777

Through the first 61 weeks available worldwide the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 1.54 million units units and is 6.08 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 4.54 million units.

The PS5 has sold 18.01 million in 61 weeks worldwide, while the Switch sold 16.47 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 11.93 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 61 weeks, the PS5 is in the lead. The PS5 has a 38.8 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 35.5 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 25.7 percent.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch US:

Through the first 61 weeks available in the US the PlayStation 5 is ahead of the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 0.56 million units and is 0.72 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.16 million units.

The PS5 has sold 6.43 million in 61 weeks in the US, while the Switch sold 5.87 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 5.71 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 61 weeks, the Switch currently leads. The PS5 has a 35.7 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 32.6 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 31.7 percent.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Europe (60 weeks):

  1. PS5: 6,990,582
  2. Switch: 4,218,287
  3. XSX|S: 3,599,563

The PlayStation 5 has been available for one week less than the Xbox Series X|S in Europe. After 60 weeks the PS5 is ahead of the Switch by 2.77 million units and is 3.39 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The Switch is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 0.62 million units.

The PS5 has sold 6.99 million in 60 weeks in Europe, while the Switch sold 4.22 million units and the Xbox Series X|S 3.60 million units. 

Looking at the marketshare through 60 weeks, the PlayStation 5 currently leads. The PS5 has a 47.2 percent marketshare, the Switch sits at 28.5 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 24.3 percent.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Series X|S Vs. Switch Japan:

  1. Switch: 4,170,411
  2. PS5: 1,285,430

Through the first 61 weeks available in Japan the Switch is ahead of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S by a wide margin. The Switch is ahead of the PS5 by 2.88 million units and is 4.04 million units ahead of the Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X|S by 1.15 million units.

The Switch has sold 4.17 million units in 61 weeks in Japan, while the PS5 has sold 1.29 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S 0.13 million units.

Looking at the marketshare through 61 weeks, the Switch currently leads. The Switch has a 74.6 percent marketshare, the PS5 sits at 23.0 percent, and the Xbox Series X|S at 2.4 percent.

The lines on the Global and US charts are very similar, except that Xbox is doing much better in the US than globally,

Switch won the comparable holiday season worldwide, in the US and Japan. PS5 won in Europe. I wonder when we switch to monthly comparison. I thought this would happen after week 52. Thanks for still giving us a weekly update, Will.
