The superload caravan lumbering across Pennsylvania had its trip delayed by something any seasoned driver in the state could have seen coming -- snow.
The 294-ton superload is slowly making its way across Pennsylvania, but had to stop for a day due to weather, PennDOT said. A picture showed the snow-covered 213-foot-long truck parked on the side of a road.
The caravan started back up Wednesday night and is now scheduled to arrive Sunday in Wampum, Pennsylvania.
The load is an empty steel tank, part of the decommissioning of the D1G Prototype reactor at the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site in West Milton, New York. The tank is heading to Wampum for recycling and disposal.
The 400-mile trip started Jan. 12 and is expected to cover 16 counties.
PennDOT is warning drivers in the affected counties that the superload will use two traffic lanes during its delicate trip.
Traffic will be stopped and there will be travel delays, the department said. A majority of the travel is planned for nighttime, ether at the posted speed limit or 30 mph—whichever is slower.
