Efforts to change the U.S. Senate filibuster and enact federal voting rights are both dead for now after a proposed filibuster change failed late Wednesday night with a 52-48 vote in the Senate.Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan joined 46 other Democrats in voting to change the filibuster rule regarding voting rights legislation. Two Democrats – Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema – joined all 50 Republicans in opposing the change.“I know that tonight’s vote left people across the country disappointed — and rightly so. But our fight to protect the right to vote does not — and cannot — stop here,” Hassan wrote on Twitter.“Outraged that every Republican in the U.S. Senate chose partisanship over democracy today. Our democracy is in danger until Congress passes meaningful legislation to safeguard voting rights and our elections,” Shaheen wrote on Twitter. Democrats tried to use a NASA bill as a vehicle to create a “talking filibuster” in the chamber, which would have effectively ended the need for 60 votes to pass legislation.President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris said the fight isn't over."I am profoundly disappointed that the Senate has failed to stand up for our democracy. I am disappointed — but I am not deterred," Biden wrote on Twitter. "We will continue to advance necessary legislation and push for Senate procedural changes that will protect the fundamental right to vote."“The president and I are not going to give up on this issue. This is fundamental to our democracy and it is non-negotiable,” Harris said.Manchin and Sinema shot down the filibuster change, saying it would reduce bipartisanship, but both say they support changes to support voting rights.According to an Associated Press analysis, the bill would have created a national automatic voter registration, allowed all voters to cast ballots by mail and weakened voter ID laws. It also would have banned partisan gerrymandering and forced “dark money'' groups to disclose their major donors. The bill would have also made interfering with the vote count or failing to accurately report the results of that count a violation of the Voting Rights Act, the AP reported.Advocates of the bill said it was necessary to protect against voting restrictions passed in several states after former President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed there was massive fraud in the 2020 election, which he lost.
