CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Joe Burrow is the pride of The Plains in Athens County.
The stadium at his former high school has his name, and blocks away, his parents beamed with pride as they shared family photos at home.
It's the same family home where Joe got the call saying he was being drafted by the Bengals, but it looks a little different now. Robin and Jimmy Burrow joke that after the draft, people on social media told them to change the curtains.
Still, the home is filled with photos of older brothers and honors, including the Heisman Trophy. The Burrows say the night he won it was an incredible night that created some of their favorite photos.
Robin was quick to point out how touched she was by the words her son said following the trophy ceremony. He spoke about the needs of those living in poverty in Athens County, and it led to donations pouring into the local food pantry.
His success hasn't been a shock to his parents, except, his dad says, "We thought he was going to be a basketball player."
But Jimmy, who had a career as a football coach and once played for the Green Bay Packers, soon realized his son's real gift was football. Things really started to line up at Athens High School. Jimmy says his son blended in perfectly with the football team there.
However, Joe doesn't always blend in. He made waves wearing some special shades, and SpongeBob attire. Jimmy jokingly calls it "self expression and Joe being Joe."
The proud parents explained that the cigars after a victory started with a family tradition. Jimmy's dad would indulge from time to time, and truth be told, Joe doesn't do it much.
They are clear why "Joe Cool" comes by his personality naturally. Robin says, "in general, Joe has an even keel personality," something he got from both parents.
Robin and Jimmy have their own traditions as well, like a stuffed tiger that will be making the trip to Nashville, and they both text Joe before every game.
He usually doesn't respond, they joked. However, his mom says, "I'm sure he appreciates the texts."
