ETERNALS Scores Biggest Disney+ Debut For MCU Movie Topping SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS ETERNALS Scores Biggest Disney+ Debut For MCU Movie Topping SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS

Eternals may not have been a critical hit for Marvel Studios, but the movie managed to draw a bigger audience than Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings during its first five days on Disney+. Read on for details...

Eternals may not have received the warmest of responses from critics, but there's still a lot of interest in the divisive Marvel Studios movie. With 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, Chloé Zhao's big budget blockbuster is the only "Rotten" MCU title, but does it deserve to be? We don't think so, and more fans than ever now appear to be tuning into the movie on Disney+ to find out for themselves.

During its first five days on Disney+, Eternals drew a larger audience than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. According to Samba TV, the movie managed to draw in at least 2 million households during that period, topping the previous Marvel Studios movie's 1.7 million.

This sets a new record, and now makes it the biggest MCU movie debut on Disney's streaming platform.

Eternals was released in theaters last November at a time there was still some uncertainty surrounding the theatrical experience thanks to the pandemic. The movie grossed $402 million at the global box office compared to Shang-Chi's $432 million, but in North America (where these Samba TV figures come from), Eternals made $164 million in comparison to its predecessor's $224 million.

In other words, a lot of people decided not to see the movie on the big screen, so we're not surprised there was so much interest on Disney+, especially when you factor in fans eager for a rewatch. Hopefully, these viewing figures will help ensure an Eternals sequel does eventually become a reality.

@DrReedRichards - Second for me after NWH, but for a movie thats introducing obscure characters it's a Damn good film, i think them being unknown characters and being released Amid the spidey hype didnt help the movie, but now people are discovering at home

The first MCU film I've watched and immediately thought "Hmm, this should have been a Disney+ series."

Thena was easily one of my favourite characters in the film, but it only lets her be an archetype. And the whole concept of these ancient aliens being responsible for human myths is so interesting but the film doesn't explore it at all.

It was an okay film but could have been better. Wasn't terrible by any means. Would have been better served with a long-form storytelling method.

Probably because barely anyone watched it in theatres and waited for the D+ release.
Same for me, after the negative reviews and cold fan-reaction I chose to not risk Covid for this movie

dragon316 - 1/20/2022, 8:42 AM
@Blergh - you chose not to risk get Covid going to movoe how do get food shopping done people who food shop are so close you can give high five to pick something up other people have put down allready touched
Blergh
Blergh - 1/20/2022, 8:49 AM
@dragon316 - I don't know how the theatrical experience is for you but for me it's usually to wear a mask until you're seated and once that has happened everyone just shoves down their mask and says "screw it" to Covid protocols in the room.

Not that I would get it but it just wasn't worth it for me.
SATW42
SATW42 - 1/20/2022, 9:34 AM
@dragon316 - well first, food is a necessity and a movie well...
second, you aren't in continual exposure to the same people in a grocery store, and at least in my state they have to have a mask on,as opposed to movie theatres where it isn't really being enforced. so you could be sitting next to someone for 2 1/2 hours as opposed to passing them in the grocery store for less than a minute. Lastly, the likelihood of transmission from someone touching something and then you touching it is crazy low. It can be transferred this way, but it is not the main form of transmission, especially because you'd have to touch your nose mouth or ears after you've touched a possibly infected product. Wash your hands, don't touch your face.

@dragon316 - the difference is in a movie theater you are sit in a dark room, with a bunch of people maskless for almost 3 hours, just to see a movie that could be shit, but getting food is a priority, because without food we die

Hulkh8liars - 1/20/2022, 6:03 PM
@SATW42 - the medical community and science disagree with you. Grocery store is far riskier than a film theatre and neither are a big risk
SATW42
SATW42 - 1/20/2022, 6:45 PM
@Hulkh8liars - I’m interested to see which science you are talking about, because one of the main factors Is if you are in close proximity to an infected person for 15 minutes or more maskless. Which scenario is that more likely to happen in?
Hulkh8liars
Hulkh8liars - 1/20/2022, 7:33 PM
@SATW42 - either as neither theatres or grocery stores require masks in most of the world. Statistically speaking theatres are far safer but neither are dangerous

I usually like to check some reactors videos on youtube and the consensus i've been seeing is that the majority is really liking it and are surprised and not understanding why it got such a bad rep when was on theaters.

@RevanOfKrypton - how much is Disney plus subscription? I don’t know don’t have it
Blergh
Blergh - 1/20/2022, 8:54 AM
@dragon316 - about $90 bucks a year, not expensive if you frequently use it. Especially if you live in Europe, you then not only have the entire Disney line-up at your fingertips but also the entire 20th Century Fox lineup.

Paid off pretty well for me, especially this year. Loki, FatWS, Hawkeye, Eternals, WandaVision, What if?, The Book of Boba Fett and Shang-Chi as new releases (don't count the new Home Alone trash-fest as that was incredibly bad).
Including the Die Hard movies, Alien/Predator, X-Men and (for me more importantly) the complete Buffyverse in HD

@dragon316 - In Canada.. with sales taxes it's 165.42$/year but I use it frequently every month to watch other stuff with STAR.. so on a standpoint value... Eternals cost me under 1.00$

Hulkh8liars - 1/20/2022, 7:35 PM
@RevanOfKrypton - I paid to see it 3 times in imax. Still watched it twice on release day. Best comic film in years. Endgame was the last comic film to come near it.

Should've been on Disney+ from the start. Maybe as a sequel they can make it into a tv series. Think it would work much better that way
marvel72

Of course it did well on Disney Plus, hardly anyone saw it at the cinema.

The best thing about the movie was the cinematography, which was stunning in places and the action.

The Deviants had some of the worse CGI I have seen.

The Celestials looked good at times but ropey at other points in the movie,Galactus needs to look stunning.

Some of the acting wasn't all that,it made the movie dull and boring in places.

Not a fan of all this gender/race swapping nonsense, keep it like the comics.

The gay scenes and the sort of sex scene just seem like pandering to me.

Its not as bad as the critics have made it out to be,its alright in places.

Not sure where I would rank it in the MCU movies, not the worst MCU movie this year.

No they didn't. She's a Valkerie. They never said she was Brunhilde. So as of now no one was race swapped.

@dragon316 - Hey I don't approve of any race swapping, keep the same as the comics.

Would you be Okay with a white Storm,Bishop,Black Panther,Miles Morales,Spawn,Blade?

I wouldn't be.

@dragon316 - Not a fan of Tessa as Valkyrie. But then I think black Asgardians are really dumb especially now when we have an entire dimension based on Chinese mythology that has exclusively Chinese people, so why wouldn’t the planet based on Norse myth have exclusively white people? It’s a double standard.
