Cambridge Handel Opera to Present New Production of ‘Tamerlano’

By Logan Martell

On April 5, 2022, Cambridge Handel Opera Company will present its brand new production of Händel’s “Tamerlano.”

The production will be directed by Dionysios Kyropoulos, with conductor and CHOC Artistic Director Julian Perkins leading the Sounds Baroque ensemble. The cast features James Laing in the title role, with Christopher Turner as Bajazet, Thalie Knights as Andronico, Leila Zanette as Irene, Jolyon Loy as Leone, and Caroline Taylor as Asteria.

The company staged their first production in 2018 with Handel’s “Rodelinda,” and was shortlisted for the 2021 Gramophone Award for their recording of Eccles’ “Semele” with the Academy of Ancient Music.

“’Tamerlano’ probes dilemmas of loyalty, identity, family and yearning. Paternal heartache, royal status, thwarted love and frustrated passion collide to devastating effect. Händel’s masterly score absorbs us, with music of spellbinding beauty and expressiveness, in the drama’s tightening tension of conflicting demands. And as so often in Händel, the oppressed and seemingly slighted women emerge as the true heroes of the action,” the company said in its official release.
