More than 3 million people have signed a Change.org petition calling for the federal government to provide $2,000 in monthly stimulus payments to adults and $1,000 in monthly stimulus payments to children.
One petition is named “$2000/month to every American #moneyforthepeople #covid19″ and is directed at Congress.
The petition initially had a goal of 3 million signatures, but expanded its goal to raise more awareness about the issue.
If the petition now gets 4.5 million signatures, its new target, it would be “become one of the top signed on Change.org,” according to the website.
“Our country is still deeply struggling. The recovery hasn’t reached many Americans – the true unemployment rate for low-wage workers is estimated at over 20% and many people face large debts from last year for things like utilities, rent and child care,” the petition stated.
“We need immediate checks and recurring payments so that we can keep our heads above water. Congress needs to make sure that we won’t be left financially ruined for doing our part to keep the country healthy,” the petition, authored by Stephanie Bonin, concluded.
However, despite the petition reaching its milestone number of signatures, it is unlikely that Congress or The White House will issue a fourth stimulus check due to the administration’s focus on “Build Back Better.”
The federal government has distributed three rounds of stimulus payments. The first payment was distributed in March 2020, in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, where eligible individuals received up to $1,200.
The second check of $600 came in December 2020, and the third round of payments were distributed in March 2021, where eligible individuals received up to $1,400.
