When is a 27-point effort in a blowout win just another ho-hum night at the office?
Ask Liberty's Darius McGhee.
The Senior continues to dazzle and amaze the college basketball world with his play. As of January 18th, McGhee is fourth in the nation with 23.0 points a game, and leads the nation with 437 points. That includes 79-three point shots, also first in the nation.
That's why, despite an early 11-point deficit to Jacksonville on Tuesday, the Flames never panicked. McGhee led the way with 27 points, including an acrobatic three-pointer, while being fouled - just the icing on a 88-49 win that pushed Liberty to their 5th straight win.
Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay praised his entire teams effort after the win, then turned his attention to McGhee, drawing comparison to NBA Champ Steph Curry for his grittiness and leadership. "Ok, I'm just going to say it." McKay stated, emphasizing his points with thumps on the table in front of him. "(Darius) is not Steph Curry, but what he does for our team is Steph Curry-esque."
McKay added the Golden State Warrior legend is his favorite player, while longtime Flames fans remember that in his first tenure as Flames head coach, McKay coached his brother, Seth Curry, in the 2008-09 season. That year, Curry broke the Big South Conference single-season scoring record for a freshman (20.2 ppg), leading all freshmen nationally in average points per game.
After making the comparison, McKay gave a plea to Liberty Flames fans, who haven't yet made a trip to Liberty Arena to see McGhee in action; your time is almost up. "And I'm telling you, you're missing out if you don't come see him live, because he's a special player."
