New Amsterdam season 4 spoilers follow.

New Amsterdam has confirmed a tragic fate for Dr Vijay Kapoor.

The character has been a fan favourite in past seasons as the head of the hospital's neurological unit. Unfortunately, actor Anupam Kher had to leave the NBC medical drama before its latest run of episodes.

The missing character's status was finally addressed in this week's episode, 'Family', when Dr Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) received some heartbreaking news during a row with Dr Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold).

Both were devastated to learn that Vijay had died during his time away from New Amsterdam hospital. The staff at the hospital later got together to mourn their colleague.

In the end, Helen shared a powerful message with grieving co-workers, telling them: "We're family." Before his on-screen exit last season, Vijay had survived a severe case of COVID-19.

Unfortunately, Vijay's health problems continued and he was written off the show to have open-heart surgery. His colleagues later found out he wouldn't be returning to New Amsterdam due to suffering complications.

Anupam Kher previously shared the news last year that he would have to leave New Amsterdam to care for his wife, actress and politician Kirron Kher, as she underwent cancer treatment.

"She is currently undergoing treatment and we are sure she will come out of this stronger than before. We are very blessed that she is being looked after by a phenomenal set of doctors," Kher said in a statement last spring.

His wife Kirron has continued to keep fans updated on her condition through her social media over the last year.

New Amsterdam airs on NBC in America, while Amazon Prime Video and NOW carry the show in the UK. It's also available on All4.
