CORDELE, GA – The city of Cordele has 10 days to respond to a demand letter from former city manager Roland McCarthy, who is threatening two potential lawsuits against Cordele, should the city not pay off his contract.

McCarthy was unceremoniously fired as the first order of business back on January 4th, the first meeting of Cordele’s new African-American majority of city commissioners.

Daniel Cole, an Atlanta attorney who is representing McCarthy, says Cordele will be subject to a breach of contract lawsuit for non-payment of his contract along with a federal racial discrimination lawsuit should the city not settle the demand claim.

McCarthy claims he was fired because he is white.

Prior to his election into office, City Commission Chairman Joshua Deriso campaigned heavily on replacing Cordele’s city manager post with an African-American woman.

McCarthy was fired as new city manager, Angela Redding was hired simultaneously in that January 4th commission meeting.

Cole says McCarthy deserves his contract plus compensatory damages for the way he was publicly humiliated and dismissed from his post.

McCarthy’s contract with the city is approximately $103,000.

Cordele city attorney Tommy Coleman confirms receipt of McCarthy’s demand letter, saying the city’s insurance carrier will be notified.
