Sanchez, who was most recently assigned to Highway Patrol Unit #5, died early Wednesday morning at Richmond University Medical Center on Staten Island, officials added.

"It’s with great sadness we announce the passing of Police Officer Daniel Sanchez," Commissioner Keechant Sewell tweeted. "Daniel was a 15-year veteran, most recently assigned to @NYPDHighway. We pray that memories of Daniel bring his loved ones comfort as we vow to #NeverForget what he means to us and those we serve."

The NYPD's 102nd Precinct also expressed its condolences in a tweet writing, "Police Officer Sanchez proudly served as a member of NY’s finest for 15 years. Rest easy brother."

Sanchez joined the force in January 2007 and had been assigned with the Highway Patrol Unit since 2015.
