Jonesville's varsity girls basketball team celebrates after their win against Onsted last week.

The Jonesville girls prep hoops team headed into this week with an 8-0 overall record, posting a tournament victory as well as a clean conference record. The Comets, led by head coach Tom Dunn, traveled to Springport in their first road game since their Jan. 4 victory over Quincy.

The tough Springport Spartans would head into the matchup on their home court having won their previous four games including two conference games against Concord and Homer. They had a 5-2 overall record, and would be the second team in a row with a winning record the Comets had to face.

It would be a hard-fought contest on both ends of the court for Jonesville, but the Comets found a way to pull away for the double-digit victory. The Comets ended the night with a 57-44 final score in their favor, and their ninth straight win this season. The undefeated Comets remain at the top of the Big 8 conference standings.

The Comet scoring effort was led by Senior and leading season scorer Mackenzie Baker. Baker led the Comets with 23 points during the game. Senior Comet and athlete of the week nominee Kylie Ward finished with seven points. Junior Julie Mach had five points. Senior Lani Bowman had eight points. Junior Kierstyn Keller had six points. Senior Marissa Lehman had two points. Sophomore Lyra Nichols had six points.

The defensive effort for the Comets was led by Lehman and Baker who each had five rebounds and three steals. Julie Mach had three rebounds. Lani Bowman had four rebounds. Senior Natalie Doyle had three rebounds. Lyra Nichols led the team with eight rebounds.

The 9-0 Comets will face another Big 8 rival with a winning record this Friday night. They once again will travel on the road to face the 6-4 Rangers. The Rangers are coming off a loss to Bronson on Tuesday night. However, the Rangers were on a three-game winning streak before that contest.

The rivalry between the Rangers and the Comets has had it’s fair share of highlights over the years. Most recently, the teams battled it out in the Pat Paterson Pool A finals, where Jonesville defeated Reading 43-32. However, when the teams have played at Reading, the game has come down to the final buzzer. Last season’s matchup at Reading came down to a Jonesville buzzer beater to win the game.

It’s safe to say we should expect that history to continue this season. The game will be played Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Reading High School.
