The Lord of the Rings TV series coming to Prime Video has finally unveiled its title.

As revealed in the new teaser above, the show is officially called The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It's suitably ominous, promising to focus on multiple mind-controlling instruments of doom that eventually turned Nine Kings of Men into the Nazgûl (or the Ringwraiths, if you prefer).

The title is revealed through the fancy video which was apparently made practically without CGI, featuring an ethereal voiceover that quotes JRR Tolkein's 'Ring-verse'.

"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie."

Showrunners JD Payne & Patrick McKay have teased a bit more about what we can expect from the series, which has already been ordered for multiple seasons.

"This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to JRR Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age," they said in a statement. "The forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

"Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring – but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all."

Prime Video has confirmed that season 1 has been filmed in New Zealand, similar to Peter Jackson's films, but season 2 onward will be filmed right here in the UK.

Lord of the Rings will air on Prime Video from September 2, 2022.

In his time he's covered a host of live events, interviewed celebrities big and small and crowbarred a countless amount of great/awful (delete as appropriate) puns into articles.

A big fan of TV and movies both mainstream and obscure, Joe's main interest is in video gaming. Although particularly a PlayStation gamer, he plays across Xbox, Nintendo and PC/Steam Deck, and likes to keep tabs on many games he's not got the time to play.

Joe currently does not use Twitter, but he only ever used it to tell people to watch the film Help! I'm a Fish (which you really should do).
