Toronto Maple Leafs: Prospect Filip Kral On A Roll With the Marlies

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Filip Kral was named AHL Player of the Week on Sunday. He recorded two goals and four assists for six points in four games. The 22-year-old defenseman was drafted 149th overall in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft by Toronto.

Kral has two goals and 12 assists for 14 points in 27 games this season. This will be his first full season in the AHL as he continues his development. He is in the second year of his three-year entry-level contract. Kral’s contract earns him $810,000 at the NHL level and $70,000 at the AHL level. (Stats from Eliteprospects.com)

He recently had three assists in the first period against Springfield on January 10th, matching a franchise record for most assists in a single period. Kral then scored his first goal of the season on January 12th against the Belleville Senators.

His current level of production will keep earning him more playing time. Hopefully, he will make the most of it and keep producing. Kral is a player to keep an eye on in the Toronto Maple Leafs system.

Toronto Maple Leafs AHL Affiliate Play Well

The Toronto Marlies are on a nice winning streak right now. They have won six games in a row and seven of their last eight games. Before that, the team had lost four out of five, and things were not looking so good.

With their recent winning streak, the Toronto Marlies are currently sitting in third place within the North Division. They have a record of 17-10-1-1 for 36 points in 29 games. Just ahead of them in the standings are the Rochester Americans. The Americans have 40 points in 32 games.

Hopefully, the Marlies can use the few games in hand that they have to gain enough points to pass the Americans. It might be too much to ask for them to catch up to the division-leading Utica Comets, but anything is possible.

The Marlies’ next game is Wednesday, January 19th, against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Hartford currently sits in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. They have a record of 16-10-3-2 for 37 points in 41 games.

I am happy to see both Filip Kral and the Toronto Marlies doing well this season. I don’t know when I’ll be able to see another Marlies game in person this season, but I hope to watch Kral more closely the next time I go. Hoping the Marlies will continue to find success and make the AHL playoffs. Doing so is very helpful in the development of so many prospects.
