3rd death may be linked to hepatitis A, Montco officials say

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Montgomery County health officials say a third death may be linked to a current hepatitis A outbreak. Two other deaths have been confirmed to be from hepatitis A.

County officials say there are 10 confirmed cases and three probable cases. There are seven hospitalizations.

Officials announced earlier this month that Gino’s Pizzeria in West Norriton is closed until further notice as the investigation continues.

According to the CDC, hepatitis A can be spread by close contact with someone who is infected, but more often it is spread when someone drinks or eats something contaminated by trace amounts of fecal matter from someone who is infected.

Symptoms can take two to seven weeks to develop. They include jaundice, stomach pain, fatigue and nausea.

The CDC says most people recover from hepatitis A on their own, but in rare cases, it can cause liver failure and death.

A lawyer representing Gino’s released a statement saying, while they offer condolences to the family, they say they are not responsible for the outbreak.
