Ahead of the Senate’s upcoming vote on voting rights, The View‘s hosts sounded off on the possibility of controversial Democratic Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin getting primaried in 2024 for their opposition to filibuster changes.

While Manchin said in a recent interview that he’s not intimidated because he’s been primaried before, moderator Whoopi Goldberg argued that he could face additional backlash for opposing voting rights legislation.

“When you say to poor people, ‘We don’t care how you vote, you’ll vote how I tell you to vote,’ poor people don’t like that,” she said. “So you might have been set before, [but] let’s see how rough and tumble you actually are.”

Sunny Hostin (who called Manchin a “rooster in the henhouse of the Democratic Party”) suggested that the Senate vote on the voting rights bill issue by issue, tackling topics like automatic voter registration and making elections a holiday. “I think if we can see as Americans that they’re voting against common sense voter legislation, it could change the tides,” she said. “Because this isn’t gonna pass.”

Guest host Ana Navarro noted that while Manchin has always been a moderate, Kyrsten Sinema ran as a progressive liberal who used to protest against Democrat moderates. “I think she pulled a bait-and-switch on the voters of Arizona, and I see nothing wrong with primaries,” Navarro said. “They are elected officials accountable to voters. These are not appointed monarchs for life.”

Goldberg closed out the segment with a message for voters: “Nobody can tell you that anybody has it in the bag, unless you vote for them. You make that decision. Not them.”
